The Book of Now

for the who of verse 15

1

There is no future there is no past
Only what presently is at last
As at first and at best as at worst

2

All I know is what I saw and see
I find out how in the book of now
On the seesaw of reality

3

So I might as well enjoy it when
As unremembered as unrehearsed
I see it is always now again
See as I saw this natural law

4

As now and again it always was
As it always will be just because
Whenever it is is now somehow

5

Only what presently is at last
As at first and at worst as at best
Here is no future now is no past

6

Up in the east and down in the west
There is only here where there is now
And then again it is always when
Now is what is doing what it does

7

To wait is too late for forever
Now is what is never mind the rest
The way it is is now or never

8

All I ever had I gave away
Or was taken from me who can say
I might be mistaken about what
Was given taken or I forgot

9

I just know it happened but not why
But not why not put another way
I found out how in the book of now
Lost it then when now is what I got
In its place in time and space or not

10

And just as now it got confusing
Then but now I have stopped refusing
To see how it is and dare to say
I see I was imprisoned by fear
Then and there but not when where is here

11

In an ascetic aesthetic life
With no anaesthetic with no wife
On the edge of Occam's razor I
With no one else now to blame but me
On the edge of love here live or die

12

Riding the edge of life like a knife
In only my own propinquity
On the edge of light to be a spark
Looking for another in the dark

13

Now is what is doing what it does
As it always will be always was
Up in the east and down in the west
Through up and down to the in between

14

In the riddle of the middle there
I am within the in between where
Now at when and here at where appear
To be time and space enough for me
Not to regret it but to get it

15

When I see now what I see is here
Where those here and now know what I mean
Who find out how in the book of now
The way it is is now or never
Who get it and do not regret it

16

The time and the place for time and space
Is now as time and space will allow
To wait is too late for forever
Because whenever it is is now

17

Up in the east and down in the west
All I know is what I see and saw
Down in the west and up in the east
All I know is what I saw and see

18

There is no future there is no past
As much as I might like there to be
Now is what is never mind the rest
Not to forget but remember how
Not to regret it but to get it

19

Only what presently is at last
On the seesaw of reality
With nothing but now for now at least
I find out how in the book of now

20

So I might as well enjoy it when
I open the book of now again

Steven, T.S. Eliot wrote in Burnt Norton:

Time present and time past
Are both perhaps present in time future,
And time future contained in time past.
If all time is eternally present
All time is unredeemable
What might have been is an abstraction
Remaining a perpetual possibility
only in a world of speculation.
