for Daffodil

Twenty-nine tonight
In the Fahrenheit

I. Paradox

Is it not a paradox
Not to have a pair of socks
To my name? All the same I
Am the one to blame if by
Not remembering to bring
A December offering
For my feet from the heat my
Retreat beat in September

And so I enter winter
Remembering December
As a socks-less paradox
Wary of January

Mindful what I left behind
Too crazy to remember
Fortunately nor to mind
Though once I had so many
When no pair of socks I see
Then left bereft of any
How the paradox is me
Now but I get by somehow

If paradoxically

II. Unfamiliar

I look unfamiliar when
Face to face with myself on Facebook
Looking back at how I look
Unfamiliar when without this beard
Then before me now again
Knowing who I see is me too though

Minty fresh that day John took
What up on my roof downtown looks proof
The familiar can look weird
When it can become no longer so
Can look unfamiliar then
In the time it took this beard to grow

But what you see though is me you know
Now before you then again
Needing new pictures but the strictures
Of the desert having left
Me alone and on my own bereft
Of you to take the pictures

Though in December remember me
Now in the only way how
We know as though it were destiny
The ecstasy of somehow
The best of the rest of you and me
When all we have then is now

III. Shooting Star

Moon bifurcated neatly in half
Cold stars over where the dusty dogses laugh
Dancing to keep warm for all I know
Rolling on the ground there putting on a show
And when I think of you from afar
Daffodil I see you then a shooting star

On my own alone my parents dead
My children now the adults instead
Of how love hurts to go I know
Somehow that they love me
Dusty dogses down below
Cold stars up above me

Let love remember me
Let love come December me
Laughing with the Daffodil again
If but from afar
Come December me till then
Like a shooting star

Beside Still Waters by Jill Eisnaugle

Each person is but a grain of sand resting beside the sea. This thought sets the tone for Jill Eisnaugle’s latest poetry collection, Beside Still Waters.
