I
Out there the dogs are barking
Most only saying hi
Out where the cars are parking
Most lonely racing by
Out where I was born back when
There I am back again
Where pray the guns may not pop
The store next door I shop
In when I drop in again
There where the night has come to call
When found out bound to fall
Santa Ana over the wall
II
Marlboro hards in his rolled-up sleeve
Baby he was too tough to believe
Maybe I got it or maybe not
But I remembered never forgot
My father the hitman he was who
Was a badass motherf***er too
III
Pardon me if I stumble
But I took a tumble
Or two a few hard knocks on
The dusk before the dawn
So I may be unsteady
Although I am ready
To do the best I can do
Getting it to get through
Getting on with it for
Another day more
IV
Getting through the best I can
An ordinary man
With an extraordinary
History beginning
To feel a bit less wary
Or I may be winning
For all I know about it
No reason to doubt it
Though reason never met me
Nor do I now recall
Or how ever forget me
For madness after all?
But now in my fall season
I will go until gone
Getting it as I go on:
I am my own reason
