Understanding Differently

I

In December now I remember how
The sun set early the moon rose late
In between the two in the dark somehow

Through the deep blue of the velvet sky
Under diamond stars that fascinate
Out wondering about things like fate

Outgrowing asking to understand why
Answering why not the world goes by
Who knows why but it goes and so do I

II

Marisol is not pretty
She is beautiful
Eating spaghetti
Dutifully until she is full

Chewing and chewing
She knows what she is doing
As she does because
Al dente is what Marisol does

So she eats it all
No leftovers to be found
With a hound around
Like big tough beautiful Marisol

III

How do these dogs understand me so
Well they can tell what I mean though
I may not know myself? How do they know
What they do? But they do seeing through
Me seeing me through as they do
Seeing me being an animal too

IV

Understanding differently
Standing out as different
Where everybody was the same
I was how I was
There but now am where I went
On to be gone becoming came
At last to this conclusion

Here and now because
Out and up and past illusion

Meaning to be where I meant
To find the meaning it found me
Under a Joshua tree
Doing what it does
Out standing in a field of sand
Joshua trees understand
As much as anybody why

Understanding differently
We shrug our shoulders to the sky
