The Ever After of Never Before

I

I have never liked reality shows
The quality of the reality
I see seems lacking to me I suppose

With a tacky theatricality
To its supposed unscriptedness that goes
To show its artificiality

Inartfully as the artifice grows
To be on TV inescapably
With dramas traumas and imbroglios

Inescapable unreality
Foreshadowing something in the shadows
Reality becoming hard to see

But I was capable of escape or
Capably escaped a few shows like those
Because I could change the channel before

Now living one of those shows heaven knows
I want to turn it off and see no more
About the emperor and his new clothes

This is not even TV anymore
Here in the throes of what I never chose
I wonder what am I watching this for?

Inescapable unreality
The emperor has no clothes and it shows
This reality show is not for me

II

The Iron Grandmother used to say
Vengeance is mine I will repay
Saith the Lord looking right at me
As if to say someday you may
Be glad you took this personally

La vendetta is such a mess
And causes so much trouble I guess
She knew I could forget and let
It get to me and I would regret
Not letting something go someday

I forgot but I recall I won
When all was said and done the one
Left standing there at the end of it
Who won the hollow victory
The Iron Grandmother knew would be

She said it better anyway
Vengeance is mine is not mine to say

III

I undertook to go looking for me
Not really wanting to but haunted to
See if I was and if so what to do

I took a look around me and I found
I was afraid about what I might see

But there was no doubt no way out but in
The when of my possibility for
The ever after of never before

I had to go through a lot to come true
A lot to learn and the hard way was how

I went through what I was meant to go through
Went where I was sent and here I am now
With hounds in a Hi-Desert hideaway

The long way was not the wrong way around
I saw me come true in the life review

I saw I was and if so that I knew
What to do about it was poetry
I saw it was better for me to be

And it was better for my having been
In the when of my possibility

I also took the long and hard way through life and came out at the end with writing prose and poetry. We follow the road before us and we live it the best way we can. Be it destiny or not, it's our road to follow.

You are living in your own reality show expressed in your poetry every day. You may recall before reality shows there were situation comedies. They revolved around a situation that was, and like the family or the office with a bunch of convergent characters who specialized in sarcastic one-liners that passed for conversation. Worst of all, there was a laugh track to tickle the funny bone of TV viewers who didn't know when to laugh. The show was improved when it went live with a live audience and huge signs on either side of the set to prompt people to laugh at the right time… Giggle.

Reality shows now have a great range of subject and reality. Most get into the TV viewer's wishful thinking about being in that situation and thereby living it without having to live it. Those that take contestants seem to have countless recruits that want to be guinea pigs in one way or another for their 15 minutes of fame/or the million dollar prize. Probably the prize. We enjoy watching them fail miserably. Some of the shows are set up for unique situations that wouldn't happen by chance when the camera was rolling. I accept that and now that is happening.

Anyway, some of the dramas on TV are quite good, especially those based on true events and science fiction. I can always switch the channel and do.

You Look FatCalgary by RickthePoetWarrior

Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
