Belatedly

Breaking through to something new
It takes me awhile to get things
But after a while I do
Giving the lessons living brings
Greater immediacy
Unmistakably coming true

Fated to be part of me
By heart a part I thought I knew
Later to belatedly

They told me when I was a kid
I too could get old someday
Should I be lucky enough to
Not get stuck along the way
I told them no although I did

So I got it after all
By heart a part not to forget
That I recall from the wall

In the kitchen I read "we get
Too soon old and too late smart"
So said that plaque my Grandma had
I read at the table in
Yuma back as a kid that I
Got when I too got old then

I would be lucky enough to
Get it to not forget by
Fated for me belatedly

I lost it when I went mad
But knew then what it meant by heart

The sooner we get smart the better. It makes growing old much easier.
