"Write what you know" my teacher said
But wrote about Argentina instead
Of Seventeenth and Bristol where
I knew because I was already there
Writing about what I knew he
Meant "do as I say and not as I do"
But knowing his intent I went
On to write about whatever life sent
That meant my opportunity
To see from the inside out what I see
And write about it as I go
Wherever I went I wrote what I knew
Whatever happened even though
It might have been frightening even so
Through all of the things that I had to know
And would some good and some bad too
Madness and sadness but what I had to
All the disorder I went through
Written in order for me to come true
When what I knew turned out to be
What I learned out there about being me
Along the long way now from then
As how I could see from the outside in
Seeing me being come what may
Disordered but in an orderly way
