Mortality

Ego tries to resist
Mortality and to insist
That there may be some way
Out of it to be found someday

The individual
Persists to become immortal
Through stubbornness I guess
But there is more to it than this

Since it takes somebody
Else to remember who you are
To show that you have been

Unless you want to be a star
All alone in heaven
Be so we can remember you
And smile about you then

Since making sense of you takes two
For immortality
What we get of it anyway
When what we get is we

Connected to each other when
We are reflected in
Our being seeing us again

Since gone on is not gone
Not the ego but we go on
Gone on not gone away
Wherever we go not too far

What we mean between us
Is what it means to have been us
Since what we have between
Turns out to have been what we mean

Connected to the universe
Mortality could be worse
