Paradoxically Free

I have been both out and in
So in again now I know how

Lockdown is a word I know
I learned the hard way long ago
In the lockdown psych ward when
I checked out early for my third
Try to die but learned this word
I heard returned like I did then

I have my own lockdown now
At the Hi-Desert hideaway

As far away as a star
But far enough for me to be
For nearly seven years of
Living on forgiven by love
I am the one with the key
And I like it better this way

Far away is not too far
Not for a Steppenwolf like me

Inside out again I see
And lock the gate behind again
Having fifty masks to wear
If ever asked to go somewhere
Though Brother Dog and I stay
Behind we find us everywhere

Paradoxically free
Better now with the key somehow

Yes, voluntarily locking oneself out is much better than being locked up.

Yes, better you hold the key by yourself. Good poem!
