Empty Reflections

There are no reflections upon the glass
Only the cold shimmer of darkness
All of life has faded to the past
Leaving one empty and breathless

Inner clocks ticking off time
One moment just like the next
The further up you climb
The more it makes perplexed

Years of strife leave you blind
To those who call you dear
Your soul cries to be enshrined
But they fall short of being sincere

Tender hearts yearn to be loved
Whether they be young or old
Some pray to a God above
Some just let life unfold

What of those with hearts of stone
Standing back for fear of breaking
Aged walls of granite so ingrown
Wanting not to bear the heartache

To lower that wall leaves you unshielded
From the stones that fall upon the soul
Leaving you cracked and unhealed
Open to scars making you feel less whole

My mind plays of finding a love
Which makes true of all my dreams
I know it’s just a fantasy to make fun of
An empty reflection of my screams.

River of Memories: An Appalachian Boyhood by David Thompson

For a time, I perched myself on a flat rock, comparing my life with the Guyandotte River. Just as its tributaries replenish it daily, changing it in some small—sometimes great—degree, so have the day-to-day occurrences of life changed me. Like the ri
