True Freedom is in choice and can't really be imposed or taken away,

 A Prisoner’s Freedom

By

Bill Cottringer

It took me awhile to see,

What it meant to be free,

Really, really free;

Strange words are the key—

Incarceration, life without parole,

Rehabilitation, restitution,

Restorative justice and G.E.D;

Cops, courts, lawyers and guards,

Cells, bars. lines and doors;

Lights out,

Daily counts,

Weekly visits,

Mail censorship;

But in the end,

These things matter not,

Freedom is a choice,

Not something taken,

Or imposed,

With laws and rules,

And do’s or don’ts,

Or rights and wrongs,

At the endof the day,

Only heroes and villains;

My wake-up call:

Freedom is a choice,

Which it will always be;

My choice is—

To act or react,

To think or feel,

To do or not;

To love or hate,

To blame or own,

To stay or leave,

To take or give;

Kind of odd,

They took my freedom,

So I could find it,

Again.

I now see,

I was always free;

To use my inner voice,

To make the right choice,

Being responsible,

For that choice,

To start over again,

Reaching for success,

From all this mess,

Which is always free,

And always there to see,

For me.

Last evening on television I watched Bear Grylls and actor Michael B. Jordan on an outing on the cold Scottish coast. They overnighted in a stone sheep shelter with little protection from the biting wind. But, they caught a sheep and hugged it all night long, keeping toasty warm and sleeping very well. Of course, while the sheep liked to be hugged, it was very glad to be released after being hugged for so long.

Hugging from a wheelchair, although it causes one to get more hugs, is not the same as while standing up. I have experienced both. Did God make it so? I think not. God has nothing to do with it.

In every way, we are prisoners.. But mainly our minds can either be a prison or peace.. A brave write.

Sometimes realities are grim, and the problem is always the choices we are confronted with--damned if you do and damned if you don't, often being caught between a rock and hard place. And yes, on the trap of both being on the imposing and being imposed of the perceived loss of freedom. The only sure thing I know, is that we can only enjoy degrees of freedom and that is only by our own relative perception. Thanks for the review. Bill Cottringer

Seems like a grim use of either/or, ultimately more and more restrictive ... but well presented and thought provoking ... perhaps that is why those in long time solitary find insanity or suicide the final options and why world bodies call it torture and cruel. And what of those who inflict such horrors? Aren't they trapped in the same cell only able to delude themselves with different options they call freedom?
