Control

by William S Cottringer — Read all 146 poems by William S Cottringer

Learning to control what's really under our control is a major milestone in delf-growth.

Sunday, October 22, 2023

 Control

Control is a common problem:

We try to control what we can’t,

While missing what we can.

Trying to control

Our destiny.

Our behavior,

Our relationships,

We fail and get frustrated.

Only two things

Really under our control:

Our way of seeing things,

Our way of responding

To what we are seeing.

Controlling these two things,

Helps with all the rest.

Ron--I probably need to turn this little poem into a full-blown article because there is a very valuable insight here about the easiest two things to control, but which most people fail to do, because they are over-attentive to the noisy symptoms of failing to controls the controllables:

1. The particular lens of perspective/point of view through which we choose to see things in life, e.g. trusting vs. untrusting, positive vs.
negative, etc.
2. The reaction we make to what we are seeing, thinking and feeling.

Make any sense?

If we can find out what our chances of being hurt by random occurrences, we can greatly reduce our fear. And then, with our fear lowered we can engage with others more effectively and our response will be more effective in keeping us safe from harm.

You always get good advice, and this is one of your best.

Ron
