The Candle Lit Dinner

Last night I lit the candles
It was dark we needed light.
The power cut was sudden
It gave us quite a fright.

My wife just sat there weeping
our meal was getting cold
she was sad because the incident
had stopped her argument unfold.

Her raging broken while midstream
the darkness spoiled her aim
the bullets hit her mothers vase
she had herself to blame.

The gun was not the first thing
She had tried to throw my way
she'd already thrown the serving dish
a knife or two, the tray.

She'd opened up her handbag
thrown her lipstick phone and gum
about to throw her pocket book
but then she found the gun.

I ducked and dived to miss those things
as they flew at me here and there
I'd only said I did'nt like
The way she'd styled her hair.

It was the bouncing serving dish
That smashed the TV Screen
and blew the fuses to the power
just like a movie scene.

A great big flash and lots of smoke
the darkness like a fade
an oscar for those great effects
is quite an accolade.

The candles lit
I raised my glass
these words were on my lips
Happy Anniversary
