My Uncle Jack

I got a phone call out of the blue last month from my Uncle wishing to say goodbye and that he had just a few weeks to live. Neither of us are especially religious and the conversation was very awkward. What can you say to a dying man other than offer comfort and love. I hung up the phone feeling flat and utterly dis-satisfied with our conversation so I composed this for him. I’m told it made him smile. He passed on Saturday morning and will be buried in the VA cemetery in Battle Creek .

For My Uncle Jack

Somewhere

From within that place

That is our common destiny

Where the paths of hope and reality cross

Where reality breeches the gap

Between a good man’s life and eternity

He seeks to remember

Hoping to be remembered

Not for glorious deeds on shining steeds

Nor conquests of treasure‘s illusion

Instead, the affirmation of life’s joys

That which truly matters

His family and friends

Happiness and love

Fond memories that draw a curtain

Across those that may be painful

For even though all of our memories merge

Shaping us into what

And into who we become

Now is not the time to dwell

On the chaff of life now spent

Or the trials which still may be

Rather to embrace the sweetness

Of each day that remains

To feel the love of those surrounding him

And the love of those so very far away

To smile with pride at his legacy

A man who championed a family

Holding them close to heart and home

Rather than scattered to the four winds

So often the way of his clan

Yes, he will be remembered

With each soft tug on our heartstrings

His song will play on

For all of his siblings

For all of his sibling’s children

Who will each in their own way and place in time

Reminisce……..

Perhaps thinking out loud with their own siblings....

I am glad I knew my Uncle Jack

And I miss him

You honor him well. I've visited the veterans' cemetery in Battle Creek, and the next time that I go there, I will think of your Uncle Jack.

Very fine, heartfelt words, my friend. I am not a religious person either and do find it hard to offer the condolences that I feel I should offer. I would like to believe "in a better place" but do not, so maybe the "better place" is simply in the minds of those that believe and if the words give those that believe comfort, then that's more than fine with me.
Sorry about your Uncle Jack.
