Process living is victorious living; the living
human beings are meant to experience.
Living is more than existing or being a
barely functioning or dysfunctional person.
Henry James captures the essence of process
living in these words:
Live all you can - it's a mistake not to.
It dosen't matter what you do in particular,
so long as you have your life.
Process living is how that is accomplished.
Process living may be defined as a series
of natural occurrences and the harmonizing
responses a person makes to them that
produce change and development. It is like
unto the abstraction of an endless line or a
stream that flows ceaselessly on. In process
living goals are secondary or non-existing.
Primary are attunement or alignment with
the present moment and a creative response
to it.
In process living while "being" is not privileged over "becoming," becoming is somewhat swallowed up in being. It is like the being of noonday is not the becoming of midnight or
visa versa. This brings to mind a sign I
remember seeing over the entrance of a
country store when I was a boy that said,
"Cash today! Credit tomorrow!" I often
wondered how many people came back on
tomorrow expecting credit, only to be greeted
that day with the message, "Cash today!
Credit tomorrow!"
Process living like process is dynamic. To
live in process is to be in the flow. Sri Rajneesh
put it this way: "Don't swim float" Awareness
of reality in its many manifestations is essential
for the person living in process. Spontaneity
and creativity are also important qualities for
the person living in process.
One person who shared his process living experience with me said, "While sitting on my terrace, not long after dark, I observed a full
moon. It appeared to be more radiantly bright
than any moon I can ever remember seeing.
Then suddenly a flash of inspiration came over me and I heard these words and music that
I had not heard before and I began singing:
The presence of God is in this place,
In His presence my soul takes delight.
I feel God's presence and I know
He is here right now. I hear him
saying, You are mine and I am yours.
The person living in process is often inspired
by natueral occurrences and imaginaiton. Sometimes suddelnly, and apparently, wihout regard for the person's mooring or compasss,
he may be redirected by intuition to take a one-
hundred-and-eighty-degree turn. He responds obediently to the voice of intuition. In this regard, it is like the instruction a soldier
receives to "obey the last order he receives from
his superior." God or God-consciousness is the superior voice and final word for the person
living in process.
However, like in the final analysis there is no
final analysis. Neither is there finality in
process. For it is continuous and continuing.
Ram Dass presents it succinctly this way,
"Be here now." That just may be the only mandate one has to adhere to in process
living. lt is amazing what a person experiences
when he honors that mandate by living in
the present.
