Death, Come Soft Unto Me

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Thursday, June 10, 2004

Soft, walk soft
footsteps of Death.
Prance not upon my heart,
I am afraid of your dark,
where suns don’t shine.

Shift, shift away
from my door, Death,
no promise of yours can last.
I am blind in your dark
where shadows dine.

Swift, come swift
into me… Death?
Preach not on sights to come!
I am an earth-bound soul
where familiar sun climbs.

Soft, crawl soft
lingerings of Life.
No promise was made to last,
I concede your command;
where Death awaits.

death be not proud for those whom thou kill die not poor death nor yetcanst thou kill me... death, thou shalt die! remembering John Donne and enjoying your latter-day address to Mr Morte! Thanks!

My dear... your poem isn't about faith or the hereafter... it's the wish of us all, to go quietly, unknowing of our demise.. that sleep, which fortifies our tired selves should simply linger longer... longest, in the reality of it. This is such an honest, human plea, yet I've not read it poetically with such beauty... words are what we have... you use them and my head fills... a magnificent, tender, gentle telling of a very familiar hope. Though dark, it's enchanting reading. katy xox.

Erin, love the poem. I believe that faith plays a big part in the fear of death. There are so many different beliefs of what happens to one once they are dead that no one can really say who is right or wrong. There may be many of us that say we don't fear death but deep down they really do. It is a foolish man you does not fear the unknown. Everything revolves around what you believe and no one can take that away from you. Excellent write.

Very Good Erin.
You could have written this for me, except for the afraid part.
I liked this very much, because it's real.
That's exactly what people say to themselves,
when they know or think it's going to be over.
Forgive me, I shouldn't generalize. (many people)
You did a good job here, Erin.

Love, Bonnie

I know from having lost loved ones Erin, that it's only dark on our side. My own experience, faith-wise, True Light in its purest form awaits those who believe in Christ. And death doesn't deserve a capital D in anyone's life. Tunnels always lead to the light, even though we may not see it.

Believe in The Light. Your poem is an important one to be aware of, but never accept, our own darkness.
Smiles, and speaking from the experience of having been comatose, and awake on the "Other Side" as a witness,
