Duplicity II: My Daughter’s Rabbit Died In My Arms

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Tuesday, September 14, 2004

(my fault, my fault, my fault… )

My 13 yr. old daughter’s rabbit
died in my arms, today.
Alec, I am sorry…
Good intentions gone haywire.
I’ve been lost in mourning
for hours.

(my fault… )

A failure to assimilate
the climate of desert’s day,
in September’s ‘dog’ waves of heat.
My hands are bloodied,
my mind puddled with self-accusations…
“why didn’t I check earlier?”

( … fault … )

A fly alights on my knee,
is aggravating me, so I snap at it
with my hand… And smear its blood
onto my skin, and into my soul.
Another death I helped create;
I frantically rub the red away,
physically, yet, it is there in my mind.

( lies within)

Too hot for rabbits in the sun
after shade loses it errant
culpability. I had errands to run.
Wasn’t aware the water bottle
had fallen off the cage, in the baking sun.
A quarter ‘til one, I stand at
the back screen door, seeing
the thermometer’s heat, realize
the rabbit is in the sun…

(Guilt is a mind killer… )

I go to check, view Alec prostate,
whip him out of the flaming cage
into living rooms cooling breeze…
too late, too late… I cuddle him
under my chin, lift his body
to cooler winds, too late.
Only five minutes pass and I feel
death’s spasms wracking us,
the heartbeat I felt with my ear
seconds ago is gone! Just … gone.
I shake him, calling his name. “Alec,
Alec,” I call in vain. I weep
with disbelief. This beautiful
pet, whose essence mingled with ours,
pants no more…

(my fault… )

He was a champion Jersey Wooly,
my daughter’s first, much beloved
by we, and he dies in my arms…
I yell, “No!” in my mind,
wipe his mouth and set it to mine,
I blow nothing but wishes into his lungs,
organs of his body already done
in. No breath could bring him alive.

(I helped kill this sweet rabbit… )

Sometimes, sunlight burns, not only lives,
but souls with no return. I will never grow
whole when my duplicity leaves stricken holes.
I’ve been weeping these several hours,
my soul in tatters, my mind in turmoil.
I hate myself, and temporary life
of this planet’s incorporated might…

(my fault, in the end.)

Erin, I feel herein your pain, boy do I...I had tears just reading this, I know guilt, boy do I...There are other Jersey Woolies out there, if it will help I can look around and find one in NJ, are they from NJ, that is why the Jersey name? 13 is old enough to understand it was not your fault, she will get past it as I know you will too...Find Peace, Ed & rufuz (bury the little guy in the backyard, and give him a monument, it will make you both feel better)

Dear Heart I once accidentally ran over my little boy's puppy with my car and killed it. It almost broke my heart. I know how bad you must feel but you would never have harmed him intentionally.

Erin, I feel for you. Oh, how I empathize and understand. Your confession brings tears to my eyes.
I still think back from time to time after all these years over such a loss that I could have prevented, different circumstances but equally devastating -preventable - had I known better and thought properly about it. I love animals and would never willfully hurt them. Neither would you. We must forgive our mistakes and learn from them - it's all we can do. Would that we could, we can't undo what happened. I know it's hard right now and will always be painful to recall.
Be kind to yourself and your daughter.

(((erin)))

i'm sorry :( i don't know how this feels, but i think you've given me a pretty good idea.

brutally honest and powerfully written--someday, i pray, your daughter (and you) will understand...it was an accident. people who kick or poison or starve or beat their pets are who i condemn. someone who makes a mistake, i don't.

(((HUGS))) and love, and *tears*, karla. :(

Erin, as always a strong write filled packed with evocative and descriptive language. Gripped me so... could feel your anguish. I echo sentiments of others. I was riveted back to racing through traffic with our dying cat in my arms, knowing my young son would never understand this new loss and feeling helpless and guilt-ridden when the cat died. Take care, Dawn

Well, I always caution writers not to assume that everything they read by other writers is a true tale, but I do have to admit that as a mother, I was guilt stricken once over not paying better attention to the pet fish and subsequently beat myself up for its demise. As mothers,we think we are responsible for every damned disappointment and disaster on the planet sometimes. You have other things in your life to attend and despite the rabbit being a stalwart companion, I doubt he was your only responsibility. Nevertheless, you're a sensitive soul to recognize your accountability and stewardship over God's creatures. Don't fault yourself so.

One of the functions of pets is to help children learn to deal with death. Sometimes death comes due to a collision of life choices that no one should second guess. Loss of a pet is hard on a family no matter how it happens. Be good to yourself and your daughter.

On liteary notes, it's a strong write, creative, evocative, moving. You need never feel guilty about a lack of talent. :-)

I can feel your heartbreak, Erin. And I know the feeling all too well of animals dying in my arms - and it's always so bloody sad.

Erin, I'm soooooo sorry for your loss. This reminds me of how much I missed Freddy, my former cat.

Don't blame yourself too much, I'm sure Alec understand what went wrong and had forgiven you already. He does not want you to keep on blaming yourself. It was an accident, you didn't mean for it to happen.

Dear Erin ~Moongem~

Sometimes in life there are situations which cannot be explained. What you have been through is not easy at all, that I will vouch for, but you have to be strong and you cannot blame yourself. As Eileen said it was an ACCIDENT.

Be kind to yourself Erin.

Warm hugs ((((((Erin))))))

Oh Erin! I feel heartbroken for you! Please don't beat up on yourself! You are going to have to deal for a few days with all the family members. I can recall similar incidents.sometimes we just have too much responsibility! We aren't always goliaths we are human and need to take that into consideration. there are just far too many things to care for somethimes and accidents happen. Remeber it was an ACCIDENT! Don't blame yourelf. It's bad enough as it is to deal with, be kind to yourself!
