The ‘Other’ Side of Fifty

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Good god damn it! When
Can I finally say it? I’m 50!
And be done with experiencings,
Of 40, or 30, or, beyond/behind?

I’m sick of it! This cusp of age!
It taunts me, tells me I should feel
Better. You’re not fifty. Yet,
You’ve had two colonoscopies! By now,

I have to feel with it! Going back
To Wisconsin to have the most fun, for
The last time, before I’m fifty. I’ve already
Exchanged my eyes/birth lenses for

Fabricated ties! For my own. I’ll hold
Old/familiar with my own reregistered
Tired new-vision, reconfigured. Ah, but,
I have a secret weapon!

My best friend here, mine-wise, heart
Shared, will come with us, and complete
The circle of waring! I can’t wait! Her
With them, she with me.

I plan to write and sketch and live this
Home-held/wild experience to the nth
Of observation. I can achieve…, I mean
To say, this will be the best trip ever!

After we get home, abit, I’ll notch
Another Year up. I never thought I wouldn’t
Have jewelry on my ankle, don’t have the
Body for anything else. I’ll take what I can get!

I really like what you did with this, Erin.
Think about the fun you're going to have doing
the same for the Other Side of Sixty.

Love Linda's remarks, but I was NEVER self-possessed at 10-11 so hopefully I'll get a double-dose now I'm into my fifth decade! Erin, I love this and can soooooo relate... Similarly, a catalogue of ill-health dogged me from 20-49 and, even though I am party-girl personified, I spent the whole of my 50th year in an emotional bunker, wanting the earth to just open up and swallow me whole.. BUT GUESS WHAT!! IT JUST GETS BETTER! I'm fitter, stronger, more self- and world-aware... the whole biz. No bull. AND I've grown my hair again and refound all my teenage/early 20s enthusiasms - and am enjoying both more this time round! In short, I feel more beautiful than I've ever been, so although this is a rubbish review of your poem, I do hope this encourages you and that I haven't committed the double faux pas of reading a poetic construct as personal!?? Whatever... let's go get those tattoos done on the base of our spine...!!! And thanks for stopping by my page today. Glad you called! Kate xx

Erin,
Your honesty shines through and that's the best shine of all.

Oh my. Erin, despite your physical weaknesses of late you are far from being "old", lol. The next ten years will be your best and strongest. You are at 50 thinking its a long fast ride downhill. You just wait! Remember being 10-11 and feeling strong and self-possessed? Women re-live this in their fifties(peri-menopause delays it somewhat). I can feel the beginnings in your last stanzas. Yes, enjoy your trip, journal and sketch! The journey has just begun...

Hi Erin, I've had a hard time approaching the big 50, and wonder what the hell my body wants!? But I guess that I, too, will take what I can get, cuz that's all we can do, eh?! What part of Wisconsin are you going? It's where I be! Cows, silos, you know... Enjoy your trip, in spite of 50.

In Spirit,
Bear

I'll be fifty in a few weeks; not far behind you, honey! Be glad you've lived this long, and thank God every day for waking up above ground and breathing! It sure beats pushing up daisies! I know I am; as my twin below said, I had NO chance of surviving when born in 1959; Karla had a little better chance (though not much); doctors didn't hold out much hope. (We were born three months early: Karla weighed two pounds; me, 1 pound, five ounces. Mom fell in her sixth month; back then, they couldn't stop the labor. We were due in September; we came in June.) Be grateful and learn to count the blessings that God's given you!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :D

Happy birthday; if not, still enjoy your years while you have 'em! :)

Turning HALF A CENTURY old is as good a reason as any to go home to your roots...& summer is better than winter in Wisconsin, which I am sure you fully realize...take care, be safe & have a drink on me...Ed

I'm lacking two and a half weeks of hitting 50 - quickly coming up!! Glad I made it though (even though the body is convinced it's 112), was given little chance of living at birth (twin sis given NO chance at all). Shows what doctors (gods) know, huh?!? If you are sneakin' up on it (or it, sneakin' up on you), happy birthday, if not, whoops. They say memory is the first thing to go. LOL Believe it. Enjoy your life while you have it, okay? Beats the alternative by a mile.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
