Breaking Bread

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Thursday, June 11, 2009

I don’t need
A whole taco shell,
I like to break my bread,
Or chips, into smaller pieces,
Anyway. To fit my mouth,
And whatever else is going into
It, with a crunchy bite.

It seems more important
To contemplate each piece,
Its form, its shape, its ‘potential’,
So to speak. And then, I eat it! Is that
All right? The way to go to
Treasure flour/(history)?
Loving each bite

Is getting harder, staler, vapid,
Like a mosquito gorged in blood.
I like to taste my bits, too, each piece,
Another stupidness. We’re tired
Of being human, right? Being
Mindfull. It’s a curse, and a breathe,
Eating each bite.

Too many flavors and textures. What if its a ten-course meal? The whole thing just gives a person a headache. I like a buffet, a little of this and that that I choose and digest to my needs. Great write, Erin...

Hi Erin:
Great take on the way to "get'r done!" Another form of Divide and conquer? Or to paraphrase Ed, "Perhaps the years intrude on our gluttony."

Hi Erin, And we have to take life piece by piece, or they feed it to us... I like your analogy here... thank you for sharing...

Our habits in eating and in life are diverse and also unique, there is really no right or wrong. Yes society tries to dictate manners and proper etiquette but when it comes right down to it as adults we can eat anyway we choose even with our hands if we decide to do so. In the same token how we live our lifes as long as we are not hurting others in the process is our own decision to make. Lots to think about in this one Erin.

Erin,

A wonderful analogy, comparing food to life. Enjoyed reading this.
