Mad at Time

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Part One

Strange how life, and time, continue when we are in shock and pain. Like you are in
two
different worlds, one full of the length and breadth of grief, a private, huge place
with
lonely echos and scarey corners and niches, with a tornado at it's center which can
grab
you and throw you as you are turned into every memory, every feeling, sharply,
achingly
pelting, like ice slivers, through the mind. Chaos, turmoil, nothing to grasp inside to
stop
the spinning. Yet the other world does not stop to let you come to terms with the
new
reality, burdens of sadness pile up, time should stop for grief, time should honor
emotions
so deeply felt, time heals. Time leaps and slows, time is the supreme ruler, TIME knows
everything.

Part Two

Time is the only thing that touches everything in the universe. Time is
powerful.
One of the definitions in the dictionary, good old Webster's 1984 version, is: the
point
or period when something occurs. You know, we don't live in the universe, we live in "Time".
Intimately,
completely, wholly immersed in the flow of time. Another definition: a continuum which lacks
spatial
dimensions and in which events succeed one another from past to present to
future.
Now spatial is an interesting word: relating to, occupying, or having the
character
of space. So, it would seem, we really have no
clue
what the real properties of time
are,

it doesn't
relate to space,
it doesn't
occupy space
and it isn't space.

And, it is multi-layered, sometimes to the extreme, in every person's
life.

Time affects everything we do. We "measure" Time, we "see" Time passing, we "need" more Time or want Time to "slow down", things happen "at the same time", "in no time", "from time to time" or "on time".

The numerous words that can be linked to time, to
me,
make it the most important word used to describe our spatial
lives.

Odd.

:) You are amazing, Kate! Thank you for that wonderful reply!! And it brings to mind a wonderful "conversation" with a friend of mine in "The Use of Language to Differentiate Real Time and Mathematical Time in Poetry" at:

It's a wonder, sometimes, how a little nudge can open our eyes so much wider...Zan does that. :)

I love your write on time. I have come to believe that time does not exists. It is a manmade concept. One example. Two people stand next to each other. For one time seems to be standing still because she is waiting for her loved one. The other person standing next to her feels time moving quickly because she does not want to see the man that is coming off the bus but she has to be there. Now both have stood in the same space and yet both have "Felt" time in a different way. The clock that man made says this exchange took 5 minutes. To one it felt like an hour to the other it felt like a few seconds. Man just needs to explain what he does not understand.

Since your into time thoughts I thought you might enjoy this :-)

Time is mad isn't it. The only time it stops is between heart beats?, suspended as it were. Great write!

Erin,
Than God for time, for it marks the spot when you entered my world to make it that much better.
