Barriered Eyes

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Thursday, November 13, 2003

Do we round the circle
to reach the square
of such despair we touch
the meanings gleaned
from living; it seems
too much to bear…

Do we gloss the loss
with frosty numbness?
Harden our hearts
to future darts?

Do we lose our sense
to recommence
when life sighs
by waving goodbye?

Our barriered eyes
reflect surprise
when death’s heartbeat
begins it sweep.

I am gone, perhaps forgotten,
it matters not, in the end,
when life is done,
the time has come
to be forgotten.

Wonderful poem - reminds me of the intro in my book, Bits and Pieces to Ponder: '...each of us has a certain duration, running as long as it can. When we're exhausted, a new generation comes along.'

Interesting, but I can't quite agree with your take on things. I certainly hope to have left my mark when the time comes to "shuffle off this mortal coil".

There is a philosophy...I forget if it was Native American or some other tribal peoples...that said the greatest gift we can leave this world is to have not left a mark upon it when we move on. This is a beautifully introspective work...can be seen as either sad or uplifting...depending on one's view. Either way, it was wonderful. All good things to you, Jim.
