THE NAKED CITY music by Caetano Veloso, new words by Joel Sattler,

aka JANELEAS ABERTAS No. 2 by Caetano Veloso, new words by Joel Sattler

New title: “The Naked City”

You

I heard you sobbing on the stairs

Crying in the corner

Thinking no one cares

You thought no one was there to hear you

Have to get it out

Before you can let someone get near you

It’s no use expecting pity

80 million tears falling through the years

On to the Naked City

You

I know you’ve lost it all before

Got your defenses

A thousand times or more

You have to try to come back to your senses

Now go back to the mud

So pretty and so in the gutter

As far as they’re concerned you’re

Just a piece of meat out there on the street

For any man to do what they want with

You

The time has come to cut your loss

There’s no need explaining

It’s time to bear your cross

And no use complaining

Perhaps someday a Jesus may

Be come to rescue you and

So if your heart is true

He’ll try to save you

But

if in the end you cannot find a friend or brother

Let me be your lover

Original lyrics in Portuguese by Caetano Veloso

Sim,

eu poderia abrir as portas que dão pra dentro

Percorrer correndo os corredores em silêncio

Perder as paredes

aparentes do edifício

Penetrar no labirinto

O labirinto de labirintos

Dentro do apartamento

Sim

The original Brasilian-Portuguese lyrics is one of the most morbid text ever to enter the bossa nova rhythms, not that it did.
