BRASIL PANDEIRO by Assis Valente, new words by Joel Sattler

New title: “Brazil: Birth of the Samba”

So I was dozing in the summer when I dreamed I opened up a door

And on the other side began a story starting on a distant shore

All the aunties danced around a circle back there in Africa

But then the dance was changed forever when they settled here in Salvador

Before the lundu or carimbo or lambada or the batucada

There was the dance they called batuque became the thing that now we call the samba

Now there are a million types of dance and each one is so unique

And so if you invent a new one maybe you can teach it to mama

Brazil! Soon your dance will start a new world phenomena

then you can teach the whole world to samBA!

I think someday that nobody will be sad

We will dance together happy holding hands

And it won’t even matter if you’re black or white or green

Because everyone will finally come to understand Brazil

Brazil! You’re the mother of all  music American

The aunties are your sisters in this land

Brazil! Soon your dance will start a new world phenomena

then you can teach the whole world to samBA!

SamBA!

SamBA!

SamBA!

SamBA!

SamBA!

SamBA!

SamBA!

SamBA!

SamBA!

SamBA!

SamBA!

SamBA!

Original lyrics in Portuguese by Assis Valente

Chegou a hora dessa gente bronzeada

Mostrar seu valor

Eu fui à penha fui pedir à padroeira para

Me ajudar

Salve o morro do vintém, pindura-saia,

Eu quero ver

Eu quero ver o tio sam tocar pandeiro

Prara o mundo sambar

O tio Sam está querendo conhecer

Anossa batucada

Anda dizendo que o molho da baiana

Melhorou seu prato

Vai entrar no cuscuz, acarjé e abará

Na casa branca já dançou a batucada

De ioiô i iaiá

Brasil,

esquentai vossos pandeiros iluminai

os terreiros que nós queremos sambar

Há quem sambe diferente

Noustras terras, outra gente

Um batuque de matar

Batucada, reuni vossos valores

Pastorinhas e cantores

Expressoes que nâo tem par

Oh! Meu Brasil

Brasil,

esquentai vossos pandeiros iluminai

os terreiros que nós queremos sambar

Brasil,

esquentai vossos pandeiros iluminai

And for those old enough, the visual samba of Carmen Miranda her head going all bananas and assorted fruits!

Very pleasing 'new words', Joel. A kind of intervention, if you will, a passion of 'where words combine'. Enjoyed immensely, old and new...
