DETALHES by Erasmo Carlos and Roberto Carlos, new words by Joel Sattler

New title: “What Could Have Been”

Now in the winter of my years

I wonder where

where in the world would I now find myself at

If you were there

When we were kids, we laughed and sang out loud

We were so funny, happy, free and proud

we’d own the world if only we knew how if

We’d only dared

There was no sea that was too far to cross

if we would sail it

We’d take the risk and then we’d laugh it off and

We’d never fail it

I looked into her eyes and saw a girl who

saw something in me that was so hard, hard to believe

So I now I’m looking back and wondering

What could have been

But then the ocean roared and got between us

in storms we parted

A hurricane it turned our love to rain

All broken hearted

To see the past without delusion or

To live the now without confusion in our dreams

To be without illusion is

What could have been

The night is silent, waiting, and listening too

black and empty

All I can hear is my own voice singing

That’s all that’s left me

Of happiness there’s still the memory of a spark

I still remember looking with you at the stars

And all the promises made in the dark of

what could have been

I thought that something special was in store

But I knew nothing

I had so much and yet I wanted more

But those doors were shutting

I should have realized that this was our moment too

And there was much I should have seen it too

I let you go and now I’ll never know

What could have been

These are the little details of my life

I still remember

It was in April we parted ways

It’s now December

Sometimes it simply seems a few short months and

Sometimes it seems to be a thousand years

Sometimes it seems I’ve cried a million tears or more

For what could have been

Now in the winter of my years

I wonder where

I wonder where in the world I would be now

If you were there

Now, now in the winter of my years

I wonder where…..

Original lyrics in Portuguese by Erasmo Carlos and Roberto Carlos

Não adianta nem tentar

Me esquecer

Durante muito tempo em sua vida

Eu vou viver...

Detalhes tão pequenos de nós dois

São coisas muito grandes prá esquecer

E a toda hora vão estar presentes

Você vai ver...

Se um outro cabeludo aparecer

na sua rua

E isto lhe trouxer saudades minhas

A noite envolvida no silêncio

do seu quarto

Antes de dormir você procura

O meu retrato

Me esquecer

Durante muito muito tempo em sua vida

Eu vou viver

Não, não adianta nem tentar

Me esquecer...

It never will be just a mere detail...what could had been, when the mirror tell us of whitening hair and a passing by beautiful girl give us "that" look and then she's gone...
