OURO DE TOLO by Raul Seixas, new words by Joel Sattler

New title: “Fool’s Gold”

I should be content just to have a job

Be a respectable upstanding citizen and

Make lots and lots of money every single month

But then

I should thank the Man for my success

For having the life of a famous artist

I should be ecstatic to be me

with my very own Ford Corcel 73

And I should happy and so satisfied

to get to live in Ipanema

Two years have passed since last I was hungry

here in this marvel city

I ought to smiling I’ll never be broke

I won it all but it’s a great big joke

I was so proud but in that same way

it’s so much much more dangerous today

I should be absolutely fine

for having achieving

everything that I ever wanted

But I must confess in spite of it all

I’m still so disappointed

In retrospect it seemed to easy to get

But now I have to say “so what?” and yet

I still have great things that I want to do

I can’t stand still and do absolutely nothing but

I ought to be thankful because the Lord

gave me a Sunday personally

To spend with my very own family

to go to the zoo

And feed popcorn to the macacas

But on that subject I find nothing amusing

that was that and it’s all a drag

Monkey, or beach, or magazine,

Sled or automobile

it’s all in the bag

You look inside the mirror in dread

And see a great big idiot instead

Held up you know to ridicule

using only 10% of what’s found there in your head

If you’re a doctor, priest or cop or what

still believing you can contribute to the greater good

and make life better for the world

And for your very own social club

I do not sit in an apartment on a throne

with a gaping mouth yawning full of teeth

waiting for something like Death

to finally come and give me some form of relief

Fenced away far away from the show

In the backyard when outside the corner of my eye

I sit and wait in the humming shadow

Of a flying saucer known as the UFO

Ah,

I do not sit in an apartment on a throne

with a gaping mouth yawning full of teeth

waiting for something like Death

to finally come and give me some form of relief

Fenced away far away from the show

In the backyard when outside the corner of my eye

I see and wait in the humming shadow

Of a flying saucer known as the UFO

Original lyrics in Portuguese by Raul Seixas

Eu devia estar contente

Porque eu tenho um emprego

Sou um dito cidadão respeitável

E ganho quatro mil cruzeiros

Por mês...

Eu devia agradecer ao Senhor

Por ter tido sucesso

Na vida como artista

Eu devia estar feliz

Porque consegui comprar

Um Corcel 73...

Eu devia estar alegre

E satisfeito

Por morar em Ipanema

Depois de ter passado

Fome por dois anos

Aqui na Cidade Maravilhosa...

Ah!

Eu devia estar sorrindo

E orgulhoso

Por ter finalmente vencido na vida

Mas eu acho isso uma grande piada

E um tanto quanto perigosa...

Eu devia estar contente

Por ter conseguido

Tudo o que eu quis

Mas confesso abestalhado

Que eu estou decepcionado...

Porque foi tão fácil conseguir

E agora eu me pergunto "e daí?"

Eu tenho uma porção

De coisas grandes prá conquistar

E eu não posso ficar aí parado...

Eu devia estar feliz pelo Senhor

Ter me concedido o domingo

Prá ir com a família

No Jardim Zoológico

Dar pipoca aos macacos...

Ah!

Mas que sujeito chato sou eu

Que não acha nada engraçado

Macaco, praia, carro

Jornal, tobogã

Eu acho tudo isso um saco...

É você olhar no espelho

Se sentir

Um grandessíssimo idiota

Saber que é humano

Ridículo, limitado

Que só usa dez por cento

De sua cabeça animal...

E você ainda acredita

Que é um doutor

Padre ou policial

Que está contribuindo

Com sua parte

Para o nosso belo

Quadro social...

Eu que não me sento

No trono de um apartamento

Com a boca escancarada

Cheia de dentes

Esperando a morte chegar...

Porque longe das cercas

Embandeiradas

Que separam quintais

No cume calmo

Do meu olho que vê

Assenta a sombra sonora

De um disco voador...

Ah!

Eu que não me sento

No trono de um apartamento

Com a boca escancarada

Cheia de dentes

Esperando a morte chegar...

Porque longe das cercas

Embandeiradas

Que separam quintais

No cume calmo

Do meu olho que vê

Assenta a sombra sonora

De um disco voador...
