TROPICÁLIA by Caetano Veloso, new words by Joel Sattler

New title: “History of the Tropicalia Revolution”

Oswald de Andrade was a cannibal

He taught them well he taught them who to call

Tupi or not Tupi is all

That they are

Gilberto Gil was sitting on a hill

He heard a sound that gave him quite a thrill

Twas Jorge Ben on his

Electric guitar

Peekaboo

I see ya

Give it a name:

Tropicalia

It was a great

Idea

All roads lead to

Tropicalia

Nara Leao she played a coffee house

The audience was quiet as a mouse

Outside the streets were full of angry shouts

So it goes so it goes

The dictators had not a single doubt

They knew what it was all about

They broke the crowd with clubs and doused

Them with the firehose

And in the night

Bang bang bang

You could hear

Them as they sang

The police

Were a gang

But the thing

Did boomerang

Caetano Veloso and his sis

Maria Bethania say it with a kiss

They knew was useless to resist

So sang subversive songs

Gilberto Gil he was their Dante

He recruited the band Os Mutantes

society they would taunting they

Weren’t free for very long

They went to jail

Then exile

Sent away

6000 miles

Medici

put them away

Because he hated

Tropicalia!

The Bossa Novas hid inside

Gal Costa and Tom Ze steered wide

Torquato Neto was a suicide

It was bad

The rest laid low and lived in state of fear

And so for years we hid away the tears

But when they came back home to play

We were glad

Brazil is a such a melting pot

You think you know her but you do not

All you think you know she has forgot

A goddess!

So many musics she has in her soul

No single singer dare to take control

She makes the new out of the very old

Make a guess

That’s why she likes

To fool ya

That’s why she made

Tropicalia

And though you think

You’re cool ya

Just remember

Tropicalia!

So many years we waited here in store

Until they opened up the many doors

The dictatorship’s no more

It’s all good

Now we make music with our friends

Where one begins another has an end

And all that hurt have made amends

Like they should

That’s why we sing

La la la

Because we love

Tropicalia!

That’s why we sing

La la la

Because we love

Tropicalia!

That’s why we sing

La la la

Because we love

Tropicalia!

Original lyrics in Portuguese by Caetano Veloso

Sobre a cabeça os aviões

Sob os meus pés os caminhões

Aponta contra os chapadões

Meu nariz

Eu organizo o movimento

Eu oriento o carnaval

Eu inauguro o monumento

No planalto central

do país...

Viva a bossa

Sa, sa, sa, sa

Viva a palhoça

Ca, ça, ça, ça...

Viva a bossa

Sa, sa, sa, sa

Viva a palhoça

Ca, ça, ça, ça...

O monumento É de papel crepom e prata

Os olhos verdes da mulata

A cabeleira esconde Atrás da verde mata

O luar do sertão

O monumento não tem porta

A entrada é uma rua antiga

Estreita e torta

E no joelho uma criança

Sorridente, feia e morta

Estende a mão...

Viva a mata

Ta, ta

Viva a mulata

Ta, ta, ta, ta...

Viva a mata

Ta, ta

Viva a mulata

Ta, ta, ta, ta...

No pátio interno há uma piscina

Com água azul de Amaralina

Coqueiro, brisa e fala nordestina

E faróis

Na mão direita tem uma roseira

Autenticando eterna primavera

E no jardim os urubus passeiam A tarde inteira

Entre os girassóis...

Viva Maria

Ia, ia

Viva a Bahia

Ia, ia, ia, ia...

Viva Maria

Ia, ia

Viva a Bahia

Ia, ia, ia, ia...

No pulso esquerdo o bang-bang Em suas veias corre

Muito pouco sangue Mas seu coração

Balança um samba de tamborim

Emite acordes dissonantes

Pelos cinco mil alto-falantes

Senhoras e senhores Ele põe os olhos grandes

Sobre mim...

Viva Iracema

Ma, ma

Viva Ipanema

Ma, ma, ma, ma...

Viva Iracema

Ma, ma

Viva Ipanema

Ma, ma, ma, ma...

Domingo é o fino-da-bossa

Segunda-feira está na fossa

Terça-feira vai à roça

Porém!

O monumento é bem moderno

Não disse nada do modelo Do meu terno

Que tudo mais vá pro inferno

Meu bem!

Que tudo mais vá pro inferno

Meu bem!...

Viva a banda

Da, da

Carmen Miranda

Da, da, da, da...

Viva a banda

Da, da

Carmen Miranda

Da, da, da, da...

Viva a banda

Da, da

Carmen Miranda

Da, da, da, da...

"...E no jardim os urubus passeiam A tarde inteira entre os girassóis..." maybe even Vincent van Gogh was Brasilian, he painted all those girassois...
