WINTERREISE, Opus 89, D.911, by Franz Schubert
is a song cycle of 24 songs
with lyrics in German by Wilhelm Müller.
It was first published in 1827

Below is my translation from the German.

Well, to call it a “translation” is a bit of a misnomer.
It is more of an “interpretation” based on the original lyrics.
Sometimes the lines are almost exactly translated,
and other times they are much different.

But this work is meant to be sung,
and a true translation would have had been
almost completely unsingable

The words below are essentially my third draft of the lyrics,
but I expect that they need to be “polished up” quite a bit more.

Nevertheless, for your reading pleasure:

==========================================

1. Good Night

I came here as a stranger
And as such went away
Was buried in the month of May
And many a bouquet
The mother spoke of marriage
The maiden love I know
But now the world’s grown dim again
The road covered with snow

I must now take my leaving
Though I choose not the mark
Despite the sound of grieving
I’ll travel in the dark
I take as my companion
The shadow of the moon
And read the tracks in fallen snow
As if a message rune

Why should I stay a moment more
If feel I must get out
So let the hound dogs bark and howl
Before their master’s house
My love it loves to wander
And God must make it right
From one heart to another
Good night my love good night

I won’t disturb your slumber
I won’t upset your dreams
You shall not hear me shut the door
It isn’t what it seems
I’ll leave a note upon the gate
That says goodbye to you
So through the winter you will see
My last thought was of you

2. THE WEATHERCOCK

The wind it did dance with the weathercock
On top of my dear sweet beloved’s house
At least I thought that was what I did see
Them mock this refugee

I should have then realized, just what was the score when
I saw the hex sign there above the open door
Or so I would not have ever looked there for you:
A woman so faithful and honest and true

The wind plays with my heart without me
But none of them care and none of them hear
Why should they give a damn about me
When she is a filthy rich bride-to-be?

=======================================

3. ICICLE TEARS

How hard my tears have fallen
Like icicles on my cheeks
You’d think by now I’ve noticed
The sheer fact that I do weep

Oh teardrops my teardrops
How have you forgotten warmth?
That you would turn to icicles
Now in the frozen morn?

You’d think that coming from my heart
The fire inside’d suffice
To burn all the dew off of the night
And melt the winter ice

4. FROZEN SOLID

I search the snow for traces
Of steps where she has been
Where she and I in summer
Made footsteps through the green

I want to kiss the hoar frost
And penetrate on down
Until my tears have melted through
And I can see the ground

But will I find a flower
Will I burn to the grass
But all the flowers died off
The earth is dead at last

Is there a single memory
I’ll take away and see
When pain at last has ended
Will she remember me

If my heart is a glazer
Her image fixed in here
Then if my heart’s unfrozen
Her face will disappear

{ my version is based on a recording by Hermann Prey:

=========================

5. THE LINDEN TREE

When you come to the fountain
You’ll find the Linden Tree
Where I would dream in shadows
Of things I thought would be
So many words of loving
I carved into the bark
I always thought of one girl
No matter light or dark

Today I had to wander
Lost in the dead of night
But still I see the blackness
When I just close my eyes
I heard the branches rustle
Them calling out to me
“Come here my little lost one
Here you will find your peace”

But now the cold wind’s blowing
My hat flew off my head
My face is hard and stony
I did not turn instead

Now I am many hours
Far from the Linden Tree
But still I hear it rustling
“You’ll find your peace in me”

6. FLOOD

From my eyes more tears have fell than
Can be counted in the snow
All the heat that’s from my grief has
Been absorbed by bitter cold

When the grass again is growing
And the wind is soft and warm
Then at last ice will be breaking
Melting in a thunderstorm

Tell me, Snow, you know my longing
Tell me where, where you will run
Follow where my tears are flowing
And to her you’re sure to come

Through the town my hurt will take you
Through the busy streets and out
Where you feel my tears are burning
You have reached my true love’s house

===============================

7. RIVERRUN

Thou clear and mighty river
How quiet you’ve become
Though now a frozen glacier
You hide the wild to come

Your hard and brittle surface
Has covered you until
You lie there without moving
Between the rocky hills

I made an ice engraving
Upon your frosty face
The date I met my true love
The hour and the place

The day of our first our first meeting
The day I left in spring
And when I stood and looked down
It made a broken ring

My heart you see down under
Beneath the ice and grief
Inside my blood’s still flowing
And raging underneath

{ my version is based on a recording by Hermann Prey:

=========================================

8. RETROSPECTIVE

The snow burns underneath my feet and
The ice is trying to slow me down
I cannot take a breath til I do
Not see the steeples of this town

On every stone was almost tripping
As I flew on my way out
The crows threw snowballs at my head
Down from the roof of every house

How different it was when I came here
Oh town of vile hypocrisy
The larks were singing from the windows
And fought the nightingales for me

The linden trees were round and blooming
The rushing streams were crystal clear
The two eyes of a girl were glowing
For me and only me my dear

But now it’s only reminiscing
I want to go back just once more
To stagger backwards through the past and
To stand before your open door

{ my version is based on a recording by Hermann Prey:

==================================

9. WILL OF THE WISP

Through the mountains deep abysses
Pixie fire made me fall
But the fear of not escaping
Doesn’t worry me at all

Will of the wisp I am not frightened
Out or in it’s all the same
All our joy and all our sorrow
Is as of a fairy game

Climbing round the rocky channels
Take me down I’m not afraid
Every river leads to ocean
Every grief leads to the Grave

{ my version is based on a recording by Hermann Prey:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-h5SoGx81g }

===============================

10. REST STOP

I did not know how tired I was
Till I lay down to rest me
I’d walked and walked and walked and walked
Until the road did best me
My feet did not ask me to stop
I’d gone until damnation
I would have marched until I dropped
The storm was my salvation

But in a tiny coaler’s house
I found some warmth and shelter
But my poor legs won’t give it up
And even cold did swelter
And so my heart so wild to burst
Was like a bell that’s ringing
And in the silence is the first
To feel the serpent stinging!

{ my version is based on a recording by Hermann Prey:

=========================

11. THE DREAM OF SPRING

I dreamt of the beauteous flowers
Just like they are blooming in May
I dreamt of the fields and meadows
Of the songs that the birds always play

But then the cock was crowing
I woke with an awful curse
The raven shrieked from the rooftop
And shattered my delicate nerves

But on the window glass look
Somebody has painted leaves
So laugh at this foolish dreamer
Who flowers in winter sees

I dreamed of a love for loving
A beautiful virginal Maid
I came to her and then I kissed her
And kept the love we saved

But then the cock was crowing
I had to hold back a scream
Now I sit here lone and lonely
and think of my foolish dream

But when my eyes are closing
My heart so full and warm
Will you still paint leaves on windows
When I hold you in my arms?

{ my version is based on a recording by Hermann Prey:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tinPw2hdeU }

========================

12.  LONELINESS

A dark cloud flies above me
Out of a clear blue sky
Although the breeze is blowing
Through pinetops up on high

This man must walk a mean street
And step with heavy tread
Through lives so bright and cheery
Alone and full of dread

But oh the air so quiet
And oh this world of light
But in me storms are raging
All through the endless night

{ my version is based on a recording by Hermann Prey:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iG4F8tR_Hns }

===========================

13. PLEASE MR. POSTMAN

When the postman’s horn’s heard on the street
Is that the reason you leap to feet
My heart?

The mailman brought a card for you
Why do you beat so strange but true
My heart?

The letter comes from don’t know where
But I once had a true love there
My heart!

She’ll prob’ly say how do you do
And ask me hey what’s up with you
My heart!

{ my version is based on a recording by Hermann Prey:

=====================

14. THE GRIZZLY MAN

The hoarfrost dusted white my hair
Already gray and nappy
But since I knew I’m elderly
It made me very happy

But soon it melted all always
My hair turned black and scary
I’m terrified to be too young
How long till I am buried?

From evening red to morning light
Most heads go gray or turning
They don’t believe I go to night
On this my final journey

{ my version is based on a recording by Hermann Prey:

=============================

15.  THE CROW

This damn crow has followed me
Since I left the city
From this day forever more
Circle without pity

Mr. Crow is it your plan
To do something naughty?
When I fall pluck out my eyes
And feed on my body?

Well, the road’s not very long
You need not be wary
You’ll be my last loyal friend
At the cemetery

{ my version is based on a recording by Hermann Prey:

=======================

16. THE LAST HOPE

Standing watching trees in autumn
Leaves are falling colors bright
Lost in thought I lose all sense of
If it’s day or if it’s night

I look up and spot a flutter
On my trust upon it pin
Watch the wind with my leaf playing
Trembling I have faith again

Then the leaf sinks to the sidewalk
With it rises all my fears
Falling to the ground I’m weeping
On the grave of hope with tears

{ my version is based on a recording by Hermann Prey:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIn-pVd_KHo }

=============================

17. IN TOWN

The dogs are all barking, the chains are all rattling
The people sleep tight in their beds dreams having
Dreaming of things that they want’s a sad thing
Dreaming of what they can’t get is a bad thing

Tomorrow their lives are soon disappearing
Oh well, at least had a share of what joy was
And hope they will find a bit of it
And maybe just maybe of what is glorious

Bark me to Sunday little doggies
Let me not rest in this hour of slumber
I’m finished with all of my poor dreaming
Don’t want to stay here with dumb and dumber

{ my version is based on a recording by Hermann Prey:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8M3x61g6RTc }

============================

18. THE MORNING STORM

The storm has torn asunder
The heaven’s uniform
The clouds are full of thunder
This early morning storm

And fire red and lightning
Go darting round the sky
Oh what a day so frightening
I’m charged up with delight

My heart sees in the heavens
Its image as a child
It’s nothing but the winter
The winter cold and wild!

{ my version is based on a recording by Hermann Prey:

19. DECEPTION

A light is dancing for my eyes
I follow thisaway and there
I love to see the way it goes
It lures the wanderer who knows where

Oh, who of us of life are sick
We like to fall for that old trick
Beyond the ice and night and sin
A nice warm house to let us in
And such a loving soul within
But this deceit will let me win!

{ my version is based on a recording by Hermann Prey:

=========================

20. THE SIGNPOST

I must travel roads not taken
Where no other trav’lers go
Why do I seek out the passes
Hidden in the mountain snows?

I have done no wrong or evil
That I should shun men and hide
What is it that drives me further
Out beyond the Great Divide?

Wiser men have tried to guide me
Still I wander without cease
Stay away from towns and cities
Looking for a place of peace

There’s a sign and it is pointing
To a trail that’s off the track
There’s a way I must be taking
From which no one has come back

{ my version is based on a recording by Hermann Prey:

===========================

21. THE BONEYARD

The way that I have taken
Has brought me to this tomb
I’ll stop here unforsaken
No way is the way home
The wreaths look so inviting
This may well be my bed
To spend the weary night in
This flophouse of the dead

But are no rooms to let here?
There is no vacancy?
I’m tired unto death and
Too tired to explain
O inn without no mercy
Could you turn me away?
I guess I have to go on
With just my walking cane….

{ my version is based on a recording by Hermann Prey:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBOtMtgVGCA }

=======================

22. COURAGE

Snow is flying in my face
Shake it off with laughter
When my heart speaks loud and clear
Singing every after

I do not hear what I sing
Frozen ears can’t hear it
I ignore do not complain
Pain is what you fear it

Go thou merry in the world
Gainst the wind and all odds
If there is no God on Earth
We must make ourselves Gods!

{ my version is based on a recording by Hermann Prey:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hcl7JXmcxqA }

=====================

23. THREE MOCK SUNS

I had three suns up in the sky
So long and hard not bear to be
I could not stand to see them fly
The three of them stared back at me

You are not my sun said I
Look to the others in the West
Yes recently I had but three
But now only the two are left

If only one would disembark
Then I’d feel better in the dark

{ my version is based on a recording by Hermann Prey:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vvWqmKMyyU }

===========================

24. THE ORGAN GRINDER

There’s an organ grinder on the edge of town
And his frozen fingers turn it round and round
Barefoot in the snow he staggers unaware
On his empty plate there’s always nothing there

No one stops to listen as he turns the cogs
No one talks to him except the mangy dogs
He lets it all go and do just what you will
Playing his machine and never standing still

Funny little man mind if I tag along?
Play your hurdy-gurdy to my little songs?

Original lyrics in German by Wilhelm Müller:
1. Gute Nacht
 Fremd bin ich eingezogen,
Fremd zieh' ich wieder aus.
Der Mai war mir gewogen
Mit manchem Blumenstrauß.
Das Mädchen sprach von Liebe,
Die Mutter gar von Eh', -
Nun ist die Welt so trübe,
Der Weg gehüllt in Schnee.
Ich kann zu meiner Reisen
Nicht wählen mit der Zeit,
Muß selbst den Weg mir weisen
In dieser Dunkelheit.
Es zieht ein Mondenschatten
Als mein Gefährte mit,
Und auf den weißen Matten
Such' ich des Wildes Tritt.
Was soll ich länger weilen,
Daß man mich trieb hinaus?
Laß irre Hunde heulen
Vor ihres Herren Haus;
Die Liebe liebt das Wandern -
Gott hat sie so gemacht -
Von einem zu dem andern.
Fein Liebchen, gute Nacht!
Will dich im Traum nicht stören,
Wär schad' um deine Ruh',
Sollst meinen Tritt nicht hören -
Sacht, sacht die Türe zu!
Ich schreibe nur im Gehen
An's Tor noch gute Nacht,
Damit du mögest sehen,
An dich hab' ich gedacht.
==============================

===========================
3. Gefrorene Tränen

 Gefrorne Tropfen fallen
 Von meinen Wangen ab:
 Ob es mir denn entgangen,
 Daß ich geweinet hab'?
 Ei Tränen, meine Tränen,
 Und seid ihr gar so lau,
 Daß ihr erstarrt zu Eise
 Wie kühler Morgentau?
 Und dringt doch aus der Quelle
 Der Brust so glühend heiß,
 Als wolltet ihr zerschmelzen
 Des ganzen Winters Eis!
=========================================
4. Erstarrung

 Ich such' im Schnee vergebens
 Nach ihrer Tritte Spur,
 Wo sie an meinem Arme
 Durchstrich die grüne Flur.
 Ich will den Boden küssen,
 Durchdringen Eis und Schnee
 Mit meinen heißen Tränen,
 Bis ich die Erde seh'.
 Wo find' ich eine Blüte,
 Wo find' ich grünes Gras?
 Die Blumen sind erstorben
 Der Rasen sieht so blaß.
 Soll denn kein Angedenken
 Ich nehmen mit von hier?
 Wenn meine Schmerzen schweigen,
 Wer sagt mir dann von ihr?
 Mein Herz ist wie erstorben,
 Kalt starrt ihr Bild darin;
 Schmilzt je das Herz mir wieder,
 Fließt auch ihr Bild dahin!
=============================
5. Der Lindenbaum

 Am Brunnen vor dem Tore
 Da steht ein Lindenbaum;
 Ich träumt in seinem Schatten
 So manchen süßen Traum.
 Ich schnitt in seine Rinde
 So manches liebe Wort;
 Es zog in Freud' und Leide
 Zu ihm mich immer fort.
 Ich mußt' auch heute wandern
 Vorbei in tiefer Nacht,
 Da hab' ich noch im Dunkel
 Die Augen zugemacht.
 Und seine Zweige rauschten,
 Als riefen sie mir zu:
 Komm her zu mir, Geselle,
 Hier find'st du deine Ruh'!
 Die kalten Winde bliesen
 Mir grad ins Angesicht;
 Der Hut flog mir vom Kopfe,
 Ich wendete mich nicht.
 Nun bin ich manche Stunde
 Entfernt von jenem Ort,
 Und immer hör' ich's rauschen:
 Du fändest Ruhe dort!
================================

6. Wasserflut

 Manche Trän' aus meinen Augen
 Ist gefallen in den Schnee;
 Seine kalten Flocken saugen
 Durstig ein das heiße Weh.
 Wenn die Gräser sprossen wollen
 Weht daher ein lauer Wind,
 Und das Eis zerspringt in Schollen
 Und der weiche Schnee zerrinnt.
 Schnee, du weißt von meinem Sehnen,
 Sag', wohin doch geht dein Lauf?
 Folge nach nur meinen Tränen,
 Nimmt dich bald das Bächlein auf.
 Wirst mit ihm die Stadt durchziehen,
 Munt're Straßen ein und aus;
 Fühlst du meine Tränen glühen,
 Da ist meiner Liebsten Haus.
=============================
7. Auf dem Flusse

 Der du so lustig rauschtest,
 Du heller, wilder Fluß,
 Wie still bist du geworden,
 Gibst keinen Scheidegruß.
 Mit harter, starrer Rinde
 Hast du dich überdeckt,
 Liegst kalt und unbeweglich
 Im Sande ausgestreckt.
 In deine Decke grab' ich
 Mit einem spitzen Stein
 Den Namen meiner Liebsten
 Und Stund' und Tag hinein:
 Den Tag des ersten Grußes,
 Den Tag, an dem ich ging;
 Um Nam' und Zahlen windet
 Sich ein zerbroch'ner Ring.
 Mein Herz, in diesem Bache
 Erkennst du nun dein Bild?
 Ob's unter seiner Rinde
 Wohl auch so reißend schwillt?
========================================

 Hab' mich an jeden Stein gestoßen,
 So eilt' ich zu der Stadt hinaus;
 Die Krähen warfen Bäll' und Schloßen
 Auf meinen Hut von jedem Haus.
 Wie anders hast du mich empfangen,
 Du Stadt der Unbeständigkeit!
 An deinen blanken Fenstern sangen
 Die Lerch' und Nachtigall im Streit.
 Die runden Lindenbäume blühten,
 Die klaren Rinnen rauschten hell,
 Und ach, zwei Mädchenaugen glühten. -
======================================
9. Irrlicht

 In die tiefsten Felsengründe
 Lockte mich ein Irrlicht hin:
 Wie ich einen Ausgang finde,
 Liegt nicht schwer mir in dem Sinn.
 Bin gewohnt das Irregehen,
 's führt ja jeder Weg zum Ziel:
 Uns're Freuden, uns're Leiden,
 Alles eines Irrlichts Spiel!
 Durch des Bergstroms trock'ne Rinnen
 Wind' ich ruhig mich hinab,
 Jeder Strom wird's Meer gewinnen,
 Jedes Leiden auch sein Grab.
==========================================
10. Rast

 Es war zu kalt zum Stehen;
 Der Rücken fühlte keine Last,
 Der Sturm half fort mich wehen.
 In eines Köhlers engem Haus
 Hab' Obdach ich gefunden;
 Fühlst in der Still' erst deinen Wurm
 Mit heißem Stich sich regen!
=================================
11. Frühlingstraum

 Ich träumte von bunten Blumen,
 So wie sie wohl blühen im Mai;
 Ich träumte von grünen Wiesen,
 Von lustigem Vogelgeschrei.
 Und als die Hähne krähten,
 Da ward mein Auge wach;
 Da war es kalt und finster,
 Es schrien die Raben vom Dach.
 Doch an den Fensterscheiben,
 Wer malte die Blätter da?
 Ihr lacht wohl über den Träumer,
 Der Blumen im Winter sah?
 Ich träumte von Lieb' um Liebe,
 Von einer schönen Maid,
 Von Herzen und von Küssen,
 Von Wonne und Seligkeit.
 Und als die Hähne kräten,
 Da ward mein Herze wach;
 Nun sitz ich hier alleine
 Und denke dem Traume nach.
 Die Augen schließ' ich wieder,
 Noch schlägt das Herz so warm.
 Wann grünt ihr Blätter am Fenster?
 Wann halt' ich dich, Liebchen, im Arm?
======================================
12. Einsamkeit

 Wie eine trübe Wolke
 Durch heit're Lüfte geht,
 Wenn in der Tanne Wipfel
 Ein mattes Lüftchen weht:
 So zieh ich meine Straße
 Dahin mit trägem Fuß,
 Durch helles, frohes Leben,
 Einsam und ohne Gruß.
 Ach, daß die Luft so ruhig!
 Ach, daß die Welt so licht!
 Als noch die Stürme tobten,
 War ich so elend nicht.
===========================

 Mein Herz?
 Die Post bringt keinen Brief für dich.
 Was drängst du denn so wunderlich,
 Mein Herz?
 Mein Herz?
===================================

14. Der greise Kopf

 Der Reif hatt' einen weißen Schein
 Mir übers Haar gestreuet;
 Hab' wieder schwarze Haare,
====================================

============================
16. Letzte Hoffnung

 Hier und da ist an den Bäumen
 Manches bunte Blatt zu seh'n,
 Und ich bleibe vor den Bäumen
 Oftmals in Gedanken steh'n.
 Schaue nach dem einen Blatte,
 Hänge meine Hoffnung dran;
 Spielt der Wind mit meinem Blatte,
 Zitt'r' ich, was ich zittern kann.
 Ach, und fällt das Blatt zu Boden,
 Fällt mit ihm die Hoffnung ab;
 Fall' ich selber mit zu Boden,
 Wein' auf meiner Hoffnung Grab.
=============================

17. Im Dorfe

 Es bellen die Hunde, es rascheln die Ketten;
 Es schlafen die Menschen in ihren Betten,
 Träumen sich manches, was sie nicht haben,
 Tun sich im Guten und Argen erlaben;

18. Der stürmische Morgen

 Wie hat der Sturm zerrissen
 Des Himmels graues Kleid!
 Die Wolkenfetzen flattern
 Umher im matten Streit.
 Und rote Feuerflammen
 Zieh'n zwischen ihnen hin;
 Das nenn' ich einen Morgen
 So recht nach meinem Sinn!
 Mein Herz sieht an dem Himmel
 Gemalt sein eig'nes Bild -
 Es ist nichts als der Winter,
 Der Winter, kalt und wild!

19. Täuschung

 Ein Licht tanzt freundlich vor mir her,
 Ich folg' ihm nach die Kreuz und Quer;
 Ich folg' ihm gern und seh's ihm an,
 Daß es verlockt den Wandersmann.
 Ach! wer wie ich so elend ist,
 Gibt gern sich hin der bunten List,
 Die hinter Eis und Nacht und Graus
 Ihm weist ein helles, warmes Haus.
 Und eine liebe Seele drin. -
 Nur Täuschung ist für mich Gewinn!
===============================================

20. Der Wegweiser

 Was vermeid' ich denn die Wege,
 Wo die ander'n Wand'rer gehn,
 Suche mir versteckte Stege
 Durch verschneite Felsenhöh'n?
 Habe ja doch nichts begangen,
 Daß ich Menschen sollte scheu'n, -
 Welch ein törichtes Verlangen
 Treibt mich in die Wüstenei'n?
 Weiser stehen auf den Wegen,
 Weisen auf die Städte zu,
 Und ich wand're sonder Maßen
 Ohne Ruh' und suche Ruh'.
 Einen Weiser seh' ich stehen
 Unverrückt vor meinem Blick;
 Eine Straße muß ich gehen,
 Die noch keiner ging zurück.
===============================
21. Das Wirtshaus

 Auf einen Totenacker hat mich mein Weg gebracht;
 O unbarmherz'ge Schenke, doch weisest du mich ab?
 Nun weiter denn, nur weiter, mein treuer Wanderstab!
============================================

22. Mut

 Fliegt der Schnee mir ins Gesicht,
 Schüttl' ich ihn herunter.
 Wenn mein Herz im Busen spricht,
 Sing' ich hell und munter.
 Höre nicht, was es mir sagt,
 Habe keine Ohren;
 Fühle nicht, was es mir klagt,
 Klagen ist für Toren.
 Lustig in die Welt hinein
 Gegen Wind und Wetter!
 Will kein Gott auf Erden sein,
 Sind wir selber Götter!
=================================

 Hab' lang und fest sie angeseh'n;
 Und sie auch standen da so stier,
 Als wollten ie nicht weg von mir.
 Ach, meine Sonnen seid ihr nicht!
 Schaut Andern doch ins Angesicht!
 Ja, neulich hatt' ich auch wohl drei;
 Nun sind hinab die besten zwei.
 Ging nur die dritt' erst hinterdrein!
 Im Dunkeln wird mir wohler sein.

=========================================

 Keiner mag ihn hören, keiner sieht ihn an,
