THE GHOST OF BILL MONROE bluegrass song lyrics
by Joel Sattler
it was on a Nashville morning
when I heard the mandolin a softly playing
and out of my dream I saw a ghostly figure that I knew that I should know
and listened very carefully to simple words that he was faintly saying
the simple words of wisdom from the shade who was the ghost of Bill Monroe
He said it takes ten thousand hours to be good enough for picking with the angels
it takes a heap of practice until you can get the feeling in your skull
you got to pick your mandolin until your heart and head and fingers start to tingle
it takes many miles of working until you can learn to be be natural
be natural be natural
you have to learn to be be natural
to make it all sound breezy well you know it isn't easy
until you learn to be be natural
so I woke up and got my instrument and took it from its case
and I started playing out the message from the grave that must be heaven sent
and I tried to play it fast without it ever make it sounding like a race
and I knew well I just knew yes I knew just what his spirit meant
be natural be natural
you have to learn to be be natural
to make it all sound breezy well you know it isn't easy
until you learn to be be natural
now when I'm up on the stage performing like I was a circus acrobat
doing triple flips and using every trick that I've been taught and come to know
I thank God I have a talent that can make my people happy and that that
I remember that I owe a debt of gratitude to Mister Bill Monroe
be natural be natural
you have to learn to be be natural
to make it all sound breezy well you know it isn't easy
until you learn to be be natural
