A beautiful lyric. Especially if sung by a woman. If it were sung by a man, the listener would imply that some female was a mere shadow of his ego… A wife or child. So to be safe, I would substitute "boy" for girl when sung by a man.
But in the second to last stanza you refer to missing and kissing which makes it probably a lover that was treated merely as a shadow and not a full partner.
