good night captain
but I aint finished for the day
the full moon's rising
and I got more work to do
but aint nobody hiring
and that includes you too
Hey hey mule skinner
they won't pay you one thin dime
you may be a mule skinner
a mule skinner one last time
the bank is on my neck
and the weather is a crime
I'm doing my own plowing
like my daddy taught me to
I got just one mule left
and I aint got a mule for you
But no matter what I got
well that's gonna have to do
there was once a time
when my dad was in his prime
and we worked all the time
and thought we were doing fine
but what did you expect
we still aint got no respect
Up north they don’t use mules
but they drink our bourbon cool
up north they don’t grow cotton
and they think that hunting’s cruel
we work to make a living
we don't work to play
except for every Sunday
after we go to church to pray
and in the evening find us picking
on the porch or in the yard
and our lives are worth the living
even though it may be hard
and when our time is over
and we're put into our graves
and they cover us with clover
know our souls they have been saved
someday the last mule skinner
will sing the last mule skinner blues
some day the last mule skinner
will sing the last mule skinner blues
and when St Peter opens up the gates
he hardly can refuse
