The Song of Winter

Spenserian Sonnet

Right where I stand behind the window glass;
looking to see leaves of autumn tumble
and skip around and between yellow grass,
I observe summer’s golden hues now crumbled;
like abandoned dreams, forgotten, muffled
voices on the other side of silence,
and I try hard to resolve the jumble
of muted words, words! Sounds without brilliance
echoing a distant and corrupt cadence,
and rhymes so weak and faint, no more belong
with me, where I live inside the silence,
where music fades; lips mime a garbled song,
and I hope to steal one last glimpse of spring
but summer’s spent; fall gives to winter’s sting.

Oddly. Winter is on its way out. I will miss my favourite season. It knows my soul. Thank you for this offering, Carmen. I love it. Love and peace to you. Regis

Carmen, stunningly vivid imagery! I could see the miming lips of a lone figure lost in tumbling thoughts as she stared through the glass at the view which was not as quiet as the room in which she wistfully stood.
Excellent!

The short 'u' sounds just absolutely dominate, along with these thoughts: growing more in our experience on the earth; sharing the brilliance of the colors of our experience and share how they've tinted our personalities; striving to be more patient (hopefully we are anyway); having more of a spirit of letting go of things that have no more use nor purpose in our lives; and appreciating silence, the gateway to memories once we are long passed on.

Not quite ready for winter, as much as I enjoy the white season, but I was ready for this... it is beautiful, even when it grabs the heart and squeezes in the reading.

Subtle desperation here, Carmen, and whispered almost like a prayer. Some lovely sentiments couched in gentle and mellowed tones and hues. You paint a scene of the "bleaching" effect of winter and I can almost see the more skeletal husks of leaves and trees. Again, love the repetition of "words" in line 8 - the turning point, I guess. Words jumble and toss lifeless and spent, like the leaves. A powerful metaphor. TY Kate xx

I particularly like:

"...........Sounds without brilliance
echoing a distant and corrupt cadence,"

all of it caught my imagination, but particularly that part.

Carmen, this is one superbly written sonnet ... the imagery, atmosphere, rhyme and meter all contribute to enhancing the mood of the seasons ... not easy writting one of these ...
