I wanted to make a lasting impression with a very influential crowd. So I wore my black silk to the party -- it stands out in silent poise. This delicate silver chain a subtle accent around my neck, a gift from my daughter, a treasured remembrance of a Christmas past. Suddenly, in their glamorous presence I wondered: do wrinkles show? They are all wearing gold… Self-conscious, I placed a hand on my throat hiding the trinket I love the most. The silver ring you gave me, all that’s left of us -- still on my finger, but their diamonds shine bright, so I hid my hand, and bowed my head. I was suddenly lowly, deprived, and unloved. Their hair, I noticed, all perfectly done -- color intact, mine came from a bottle, my curls untamed, frame my face, au natural. They’re all wearing designer suits, I touched my subtle black silk -- I should have worn blue. I felt the upsurge of vulnerability pump fright into my heart. I wonder: do they think I’m unattractive? Do they think I’m out of place? But the crowd was into self-admiration, No one was looking my way. They’re years behind me, I know, That makes them young, and me, old. They’re into glimmer, and show, Whatever made me think I could impress someone tonight? So I licked my wounds, took my outdated self home, A good look in the mirror said I am years ahead, and on that note I put all useless worry aside, dipped my pen, and wrote a book.
Carmen, this is such a moving piece clearly depicting the thoughts and emotions we women share when first attempting to impress. This poem is delightful, insightful, and ends on a clear note of truth. By the way, thank you for your kind words regarding "Cradle Me." What is the measure of a poet? Well, it is not by me: rather, it is by you and a number of other masters I've discovered here at Authors Den.
