I wrote this four or five weeks ago -- consider it a belated Christmas greeting
Sallyanne was playing in the mall
in tailored grey uniforms on
nickel-plated instruments
playing songs of the season
for the maddened crowd
shopping for happiness
in the shops along the mall,
who care
not at all
for a prince
(even one of peace),
a god with us,
or a baby born
in a cattle stall.
Sallyanne was playing in the mall
her tones, muted, modulated,
awakens something --
something too long asleep --
too long: a time, a place recalled;
people remembered;
feelings beyond poignant;
a luminous pellucid
state of memory
and desire…
Sallyanne was playing in the mall
serious intent, calvanized joy
simple arrangements,
of ancient carols
over and under the
hubbub of madness
in the halls of mammon.
but within my heart
unsought, unbidden
a child is born
and
i believe again....
