Come, raise a glass
To those who have passed
in the passing year
The great and the terrible
who troubled the body politic;
The talented, whose voices,
now stilled, but not forgotten,
brought pleasure, insight,
and understanding;
Family and friends whose love
shaped and defined us ---
whose passing
leaves an emptiness
that naught will ever fill
Raise a glass to the year’s other losses:
Dreams that will not come true ,
to comfortable images
of ourselves that have died
Raise a glass to the old.
Now raise a glass to the new
To what ever the new year brings,
Illness or heath.
Gain or loss
Life or death
To whatever the New Year brings
Come! Raise a glass.
