A tale from the Bush

"It's the Wolf Wind, Boy." Old Thom said,
"Be a bad winter."  "How do you know?"
"I heard him howling." the old man looked off
into eternity, "I heard him howl.".
Old Thom would say nothing more.
though we sat in silence for another hour.

The other elders shrugged when  I asked them.
"Wolf Wind"  they laughed as the spoke.
"Old Thom is half cracked." they said.
"Like his grand father before him.  Tea here."
"We call him Little Wolf  because
we call his Grandpa Wolf Wind."
"Both cracked,"  Thy laughed again, nervously.
We sat in silence for an hour and some
but they said no more ...

Winter came and it was bad.
one howling snow after another.
Hard cold bitter winter from
October to early May.  Cold winter,
bitter, and hard; hard on the young
and strong, hard on the old.  many died
It was hard on old Thom...

We found Thom and his three old  dogs
toward the end of March.  Found them
not a mile from the village where they
had frozen to death in February.
Buried 'em all in the same grave
I wept as I smoothed the last
shovel of frozen earth on the mound.
Wolf  Wind blew hard that night blew ,
blew all  day an into the next night.
It moaned like a banshee howled like a wolf.

That night in a dream, if dream it was, I saw
Old Thom, his three dogs, all in their prime
frolicking the snow with a large white wolf,
romping in a snow filled clearing  as big as the sky
Old Thom was grinning, the dogs were grinning
the wolf, too, had a  silly  grin on him.
"Silly wolf, you." Thom said and winked at me.
I awoke with the same damned crazy grin ...

I was enthralled from the first word. Being a wolf lover and believing that some can see beyond what is visible I enjoyed this so much. I'm putting this one in my library.

Much is said here John in this piece about the wisdom of the elders and their communications beyond the reach of our ears. Makes me remember my Granny saying something told me,etc. and the something would call her by name. Enchanting. Mikii
