the fat old man in the glass

I see him in the shop windows as I pass:
A jolly sort, round tummy; hair, what’s left,
cropped short, and mainly grey
beard almost half white.
He could play, has played, Santa,

He moves a little slow and his hand shakes
a tiny bit. His sea grey eyes, still sea bright
need help --- just a little – to see.
His face is tanned, and lightly weathered..
Sometimes he looks like my father
And sometimes he looks like me.

But he is not me, not really me,
Oh, I am grey, and shaky and fat, old
But not where it counts. Where it counts
I hunger to learn, to live to love. I am alive
More so than ever, alive to dreams a young
Man wouldn’t dare. Am I old?

I think not!!!

I am older but arguably not much wiser, and like you, in my heart still nineteen. Too bad the body is my enemy. Only in dreams are we still the picture of our youth. Good imagery, John.

John,

This...

"Where it counts
I hunger to learn, to live to love. I am alive
More so than ever, alive to dreams a young
Man wouldn’t dare."

That is the KEY to life! Very good write!

I believe that age is a matter of the heart and in this thought provoking write you make it clear that we all have the ". . .hunger to learn, to live to love." This desire exist whether you are 9 or 99.

Excellent write!

Bravo!! The thirst for knowledge is the greatest gift we have, up until that last moment, the wall to more knowledge will be breached, and then...what? Exciting thoughts, wondrous human life, treasured and measured, I will miss it.

May you find some quenching of your thirst in this new New Year, John! May we all find such.
