continuing my ride across an intimate landscape. Part 3 itself has three parts and is subtitled LOST

--- 30 ---

LOST

Today I’m riding the Grey Mule,
Leading Red. Doesn’t’ matter,
We have lost our way. Damn!
Couldn’t go back if we wanted to,

Can’t get where we want to go
The trees and rocks start looking
the same. The road is long and
nondescript. I am lost: without hope.

We cross a bridge, a rickety wooden
bridge over a noisy creek that flows
down from the right. Past the bridge
it turns and follows trail for a while.

Where the creek turns away stands a
Stone lean-to, and a broken down
corral. There’s another four hours
of day light: but i quit for the night.

I unsaddle and groom the mules,
Check and clean there hooves.
Half an hour’s work fixes the corral
I turn em loose, and head for the creek

The creek looks “fishy”, so I set a line
or two upstream from the corral. I
Fill the coffee boiler, collect some
“Squaw wood” and head for the shed.

A boiling fire is the work of s moment
then i sit back to think. How the hell
Did I get here? No farther from the one
no closer to the other. How’d I loose my way?

end pt 1
