The red mule is a little balky
this morning -- even allowed
himself to buck -- unusual.
The grey mule hangs back
not wanting to be kicked.
Can’t say as I blame her:
Red kicks hard I know.
He has kicked me, twice.
I keep a light rein on Red
neither loose nor taunt
and hold him to a racking gait
letting him set the pace.
A mule kicks for a reason,
you’ve done something stupid,
the mule feels threatened
and he kicks out. Simple.
A woman will kick you for being
not what she wants you to be:
if you change she’ll keep kicking
just to keep you dishonest, I guess.
A strange comparison, perhaps,
riding a fractious mule this morning.
But having been kicked by both
I’d rather be kicked by a mule
