Poem Artwork

The southern countryside is always beautiful with wonderful aromas of fresh mown hay and peaches, apples, watermelons and fresh baked bread...then there's the other side.....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i stopped the car to focus my eyes
a cloud of pure darkness in thousands of flies
the breeze was coming up from the south
the stench was unbearable and I covered my mouth
just then I saw buzzards circling above
they'd swoop down and eyed their candy below
now how can the beauty before my eyes
be customized visually by so many flies
and who sprayed the air with sweet yukky
smells
of rotting old flesh in something's new hell
i looked to the east and saw pictureque pastures
full of sunflowers...a southern rapture
to the west was a grove of sweet apple trees
a few small flowers and buzzing honeybees
i stooped under the fence to venture much further
came upon a site and I shouldn't have bothered
dixie has beauty with aromas sublime
she lends her beauty to soft southern rhymes
but nothing stinks more and doesn't amuse
like a ride in the country and a stinking dead mule.
I remember some of those stenches. And the buzzards flying overhead ready to strike. We looked long and hard at what was left later. Not much, right? Thanks for the "tour".
A most beautiful self-composting write, Susan... only you could paint such wonder and elegance around this decaying carcass! For some reason it makes me think of the traditional Tate&Lyle Syrup Can artwork of the swarming bees from the dead lion's belly... with the logo: "Out of strength, sweetness"... Seems to sum your work up nicely, it seems to me. Hope you're well. Kate xx
I recall this one before, and the reference to the Southern Literature Society is unmistakable. I believe a manuscript you can't get published is a"dead mule."
I, too, have wondered how things so beautiful, fragrant, and tasty going in, come out ugly, stinky, and putrid. Guess it just makes them beautiful, fragrant, and tasty to buzzards and beetles.
Another great write and though I don't think I want to go check out the mule anytime soon, it is good to have your special brand of Southern wit gracing the pages of my mind again. Welcome back, I was starting to worry we had lost you.
Wow, what a write...a mixture of emotions, a picture of a reality in the country. You've penned it well, with powerful imagery and a touch of humor! Enjoyed, anxious to visit the site...
Quite different Susan. A little humor and some sorrow. I hope you did the right thing and buried that poor old mule right then and there.
Susan, that mule saw better days and now probably is in a place where there aren't heavy burdens to bend its back or a wooden stick to whack its backside. Now the mule has reached its Paradise.
Quite a change from your style and subject matter Susan
But still has your perfect R&R
Hahaha!! Hi Susan, fancy meeting you in a place like this . . . Somebody shot the piano player last night so I guess there won't be any entertainment . . . Unless you want to go up there and recite this little stinker . . . er . . . Wonderful poem about a dead mule . . . Gotta love it and I assume The Dead Mule Society did . . . You are wonderful .
Oh, YUCK!!!!!!!!! LOL Forgot about that - and manure - and pigfarms - and chicken processing plants - other than these, the South's got it all over the rest of the country! Thanks for the needed laugh, Susan, well done.
(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
