A man has a surprising but comforting dream in between thoughts of death.

It was always cold at that time in the early morning
There were blankets and plenty of them
But there weight put to much pressure on my broken foot
A twenty degree turn caused enough pain to make me moan
The clock on the wall said two o'clock
If I were home I would get out of bed and feed my pets
I would speak to them and in cat language they would respond
But in this place which was called ICU I was probably going to die
I really did not want to die there, even though I seen Steve everyday
I missed him and I also missed Lisa very much
Wooden shoes I would wear if I could be with my little girl again
I was feeling sick and feelings of nausea cramped my body
Let me press the nurses call button and see if she comes in
Instead the nurse's tech came in, what could I do for you she asked me
Actually she could have emptied the urinal before it spilled all over me
There is nothing like cold urine on an ice cold body
Fortunately I did not even have to mention it because she did empty it
What can I do for you she then asked
I need something for pain, that had become the extent of my vocabulary
I will tell the nurse she said as she shook her butt walking out the door
If I looked like Steve again she would take better care of me that was for sure
After twenty minutes of exccruciating pain a new different nurse arrived
I have some morphine and percocet for you she said
As soon as the morphine entered my blood stream I felt relief
I swallowed the two percocets and fell off to sleep
The heck with dying as I started to dream
I dreamed of all people but my ex-wife
Why I dreamed of her I do not know
I could feel her gentle touch all over my ailing body
To this day I am wondering of all the women I have been with why dream of her
And on my death bed or so I thought
I warmed to her touch as I drifted further into a rem dream
Dear Anthony, This is a very accurate description of a hospital stay and the same happened to me. There is nothing more unpleasant than to be at the mercy of any service related to our health. In a similar experience I had to call my wife who was a few miles away, as no nurse appeared when I called. I hope you don't need this service again. Love Emile

Not fun to be in the ICU; you've captured it very well! It was not fun being hooked up to tubes and monitors; there was no way I could get comfortable! (I was in the ICU for a week!) Glad that's all behind me now ...

Pretty good ICU memories, or at least thoughts about memories / I spent many hours off and on in the ICU with my wife before she died last year / They are grim places . . .
