I drank for years, used alcohol to help soak up my insecurities, problems and fears. Quit 20 years ago today, no more alcohol coming my way. Drinking did help with boredom, also cause you to lose your freedom.
With alcohol there never was a dull moment around. Needed support, there always was the ground. Ducking and dodging the police, killed quite a bit of time. They arrest you then charge you with a crime.
When you quit drinking, the mind does more clear thinking. Thinking about filling the gap, when boredom comes to zap. Better find a good substitute quick, or boredom will put you in a trick.
Congratulations... writing does help as does other simple joys... but, this alcoholic, truly loves the time that others would consider "boring." From the helter-skelter life of drugs and booze, boredom is kind of peaceful...
To substitute alcohol with writing is a very wise thing indeed, Grady. The genie in the bottle is always trying to get me to let him out. Congratulations on 20 years of freedom. Thank you for sharing. Love and peace to you. Regis

I've always admired America for its atempt at prohabition..
I read 80% of murders in the states are drink/drug related..
Congratulations on the 20 years of sobriety, Grady. For those who are addicted to alcohol, every day of sobriety is an epic achievement. I am glad that you have found other ways to spend your time. I am certain it has afforded you the ability to better appreciate your life and your family.

i could have written this as far as it being the truth for me too. it has been 15 years for me and in the beginning i thought nothing would be interesting without rum to flavor it but life surprised me. i do get bored and restless still at times but writing has filled much of the gap for me. you are a wonderful poet grady
I echo Ed, Congrats on being an example of how to take control of your life. Be proud Grady,if you accomplish nothing else, what you did is powerful and inspiring!Giving up any addiction is a victory!
