Somalia was divided into five regions during the scramble for Africa. The Italians took the South, The British occupied the North and the French seized Djibouti. The Ethiopians got a share of the scramble, snatching the Western part of Somalia while some part of the Somali territory is given to the Kenyans. When Somalia became independent, two regions merged and pledged to liberate the other three with blood and bone. But that dream never materialized.

The fresh air of freedom found its way
into the lungs of a newly born baby
A loud squall was heard from afar
Delivery site was a UN maternity clinic
The midwife was an Italian doctor
The baby’s name was "Somali Republic"
Date of birth was July 1st. 1960

As a gesture of fraternal openness
the North merged with the Southerners
The concept of "Greater Somalia"
was put in place as a national vision
Over the skies of the Horn of Africa
The Star of Somalia started to rise
Euphoria swept all across the nation

The baby crawled in the red carpets
Of the beautiful liberty corridors
But sister nations in the Horn
Viewed the child as “ A Time Bomb”
To them “Greater Somalia” carried
Horrendous feelings of destabilization,
They thought the child was an arrow
Being released from the bow of evil

Well after its ninth birthday.
The child-state was orphaned.
The president was shot dead
That was a recipe for civil war
Target missed, narrowly though
Somalia fellin the custody of soldiers
“Greater Somalia” was further sharpened
Obsessions moulded the national psyche
Everybody rallied behind the rulers

Leaders shuttled from country to country
to make deals in arms shopping sprees
Their voices echoed in confernce rooms
They read papers in meetings which said
“In a secret swap by the British,we lost large tract of land to Ethiopians,
we need it back soon.
NFD is under the reign of Kenyans,
We need it back, too
As for Djibouti, the case is exceptional
We privately talk with the French”

The time bomb ticked faster
No one tampered with it,
everybody scared.
Fortunately, it didn't go off in Kenya. Thanks for …............
But it exploded in the Ethiopian border
A war broke out between the two nations
Peace initiatives proposed.Agreements and protocols were signed

With the scrapping of the “War Itch”
The walls of unity made serious cracks
Vision was lost in a game of betrayal
Somalia was shaken so bitterly
by the winds of change in the Horn
and eventually it collapsed over its knees
Instead bringing the “Missing Three”
The merged portions split into two
In the North we have Somali-Land
In the South we have chaos and strife
The flame of greater Somalia was
Blown off with the breath of peace
The death of Greater Somalia is a mighty demise. It is a shattered dream

I love the personification of Somalia in this poem...
Sadly, it reminds me of my beloved Haiti and the struggles they have had to remain united behind each elected president...

Thank you Abdi, for clarifying the confusion
about the division in your country. When you
think of it, almost all the nations the world over
are divided. Will there ever be a solution? I pray so!

The history of Somalia is sad indeed. Anything that began with an act of the UN is almost destined for failure. I hope peace and freedom are acheived for you and the people of Somalia.

Abdi-Noor. The dream for Somalia should be. Foreign greed and rule set aside, and all of Somalia a free self ruling country; by whatever means necessary to establish this. Force or ballot. Greed carved Somalia up into pieces. Can it be reformed by peaceful means or will force be necessary? Only you know this. Very clear, incisive writing. I hope your dreams and goals are fulfilled; just as the founding fathers os the USA fulfilled theirs. The USA had to fight for its freedom or we too would still be in slavery. It seems that war is often a necessary evil. Bill

It doesn't have to be that way, but the terrorist will not help to rebuild or unite the nation.
