The greatest tragedy in Somalia is not the war, not famine either. It is the lack of institutional mechanism to produce a national leader. The community structures and political set-up are all designed to eliminate any prospective future leader for Somalia. And until we get a national hero and leader with convictions, courage and integrity we shall remain divided, disoriented, dislocated and enormously disintegrated.
I celebrate tonight for posting my 500th poem at the authorsden. It is time to take a short break from writing though writng is the only thing I can never stop.
A national leader is born
When there are parties
When there are forums
When people exchange ideas
When they debate constructively
A national leader is born
When people are allowed
To associate and intermingle
Not on tribal or clan basis
But on genuine principles
Based on freedom and democracy
If the avenues of change are blocked
Armed rebel leaders would emerge soon
Who in the beginning turn to each other
To collectively dislodge the dictaror
But once the war is won turn on each other
To fight a war nobody would ever win
A war which in the end would sum up to zero
That is how Somalia has been destroyed

Congratulations Abdinoor for penning 500 poems on this site. They were really excellent and we expect much more from you. You are a great Somali poet and one of the few whose poetry goes across the language divide.

It was the same in Europe a long time ago. One city would war with another city, one family against another. Then as you say leaders woke up and slowly managed to quell all factions, sometimes brutally, but it took years. Meantime literature and schooling helped. Victor
