This is one of the poems from The Book of Songs, written by the ancient Kularrin mothers (The Kulgarrin are all but extinct).
These poems do not appear in Quest.
The War
From the burning, we cry forth
and lift only our souls to the sky.
The children are no more. The will has died.
The call of the Kulgarr we once sent forth
will never again be heard upon the hills.
Our hands, our power, are the slaves of men.
Curse those who came to cause a great ruin.
Drive away the pink skins who know no love;
compassion belongs more to strangers,
than the seekers of the Emores.
They are empty; their hearts are stone.
We cry, instead, to the gods and to the wind;
to the sea and the rain, and pray they
carry our dust in their hands
to the lands of old.
To those we left behind; the ancients.
We mourn ourselves. We fade away.
We are forgotten.
We sleep
