Cargo is inspired by Norman Mailer's comments on a recent Charlie Rose interview about nearing the end. Mailer confirmed he was writing a follow-up to his book The Castle in the Forest but that it takes a long time and he's fully aware that he's like a ping pong ball that can roll off the table at any time.
Mailer is one of the US writers I read avidly in my youth and I have huge respect for him though I haven't read half of what he's written.
