A Sidewalk Player It is always good for my soul The Barista for lunch Samuel was there Guitar loud and voice out of tune They know who Samuel is People of this small town Sitting in the shade Playing his beat-up old guitar He sings his heart out Guitar case open wide A sign says "tips" Pasted permanently inside His "set list" is not short. I’ve heard he blew his mind People say he drinks like a fish Can’t find his way home His cackly, off-key voice Harry Chapin's "Taxi" Sandpaper on my skin Loud was Samuel Maybe twenty people tightly Around tiny round tables Is all The Barista can seat Loud was Samuel Watching from under My pulled-down Stetson Behind dark shades I listen to the noise. He played Cat Stevens He played George Jones “Sir, do you have a request?” Voice genuine and authentic I mumbled Crosby, Stills, and Nash He launched into “Southern Cross” Beating up the song pretty badly A dollar dropped in the tip case Someone clapped as he finished He glanced at me grinning “Teach Your Children” And people smiled. He tried to mimic Mick on “Angie” Voice cracking on the high notes My foot tapped along Dollar bills flowed his way People caring for their own A small-town sidewalk player The rhythm, the rhymes Samuel and the people He sang from his heart I felt the “Spirit” around me A soothing ointment to my soul Loud was Samuel A new dimension A place outside of time. Lynrd Skynrd commands Jesus on a wing and prayer Freebird...I don't think Hank did it this way Waylon croons, Sidewalk Player showcases all walks of life, a song for a handout, maybe he walks across the street to the tavern, who gives a damn, he entertained for the better part of an hour! Beer in the morning, Tequila after three, Cat Stevens converts to Islam Moon Shadow after ten...Samuel Adams ale Walkin' After Midnight Patsy Cline...Happy Hour, Day!
