Mennonite Kids

I don't normally dwell on the past, but my past was really good.

Mennonite Kids

Little Mennonite kids

Growing up in the country

Watching TV at the neighbors

Trapping muskrats in the creek.

Hide and seek with the Lutheran girls

They wanted more than we knew

Wagon of hay spilled on the road

In the middle of a hot summer day.

Being different was not so bad

Except when we went to school

Kids can be so cruel sometimes

And the teachers too.

Life was happy as a Mennonite kid.

Who knew things would change

Gone are the days of making hay

And the simple life is past.

Muskrat love, that's what all the Lutheran girls really wanted. Hayrides were the best. Patrick

you take me there Dayvid...
our beautiful memories growing
and I must say making hay is a prosperous bounty
in the clover field or on the canvas of lovers
which I am sure you still make hay :)

I know those Mennonite Kids must have some beautiful memories of the security and warmth of home as well as the hurtful ones of the cruelty of the outside world.

Yes, times have definitely changed. The simple life is gone. I was just thinking about this the other day. I'm a bit younger; but I was basically a young kid in the 70s. We used to just disappear into the day on our bikes, ride off into the woods, jump off bridges into rivers, etc. No cell phones, no video games, no Internet, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, texting, etc. Lit off firecrackers and shot BB guns with no SWAT teams or DHS pitching up to arrest us. I can't imagine letting my kids out like that these days. Somehow, we came out of it all okay. Enjoyed this piece immensely. Take care.

I wasn't raised a mennonite kid. My parents took me to a Church of God. Not much different really. I'm like you. My childhood was nothing to gripe about even if I may have thought so once in a while.
This poem gets an A+
God bless,
Lew
