Tommy died a few years ago.
I miss him terribly.

I remember still.
I was
a bow-legged boy
in knickers,
and my big brother
Tommy,
always the good looking guy
in the family,
had a nickname.

Friends,
and he had a million,
called him
Ears,
funny name
but mother said,
as mothers do,
he had real cute ears
and nice ways.

I recall
how my small chest puffed out,

a proud wide-eyed
buff-bellied hummingbird
hovering
and humming
two feet off the ground

when a friend
of my big brother
said how you doing,
Little Ears?

Oh, Little Ears, you have real cut ears and nice ways, too! What a warming poem of remembrance for your brother Tommy; I'm sure he is grinning ear-to-ear down upon you right this minute.

...i was so in a place, a space emotionally that this pierced much deeper than imagined. . ..
rendered as only you can with such a soft grace and tender open.ness.....where everything is made right and more luminous jsut be offering a word.
in the beginning was the word. ..
softspoken truth--

Awww, how precious and heartfelt, bringing tears to my eyes as I read every precious word of love and endearment. So sorry your big brother is gone, but in your heart he will always remain....

Be always safe,

Gene, this touches the heart and the way you handle the telling without allowing it to spill over into trite is admirable and makes the heart feel more. The humming-bird image is particularly strong and finely conceived. Well done, Little Ears!

Beautiful poem remembering a special person. My older brother is gone too. His friends called him "horse" in Spanish because for most of his life he was strong as a horse. I believe that is 'El Cabio (SP?' or something like that. His real name was Richard but he was also called Dick. I called him Dee Dee. Lot of names for one guy. Being called 'Ears' or 'Little Ears' was cute. What happens to our brothers when we are gone--is that when they are forotten and live only in the poems and stories we write.

Nice when someone compares you to someone you look up to and trying to walk in their footsteps, Gene, in this case your big brother...this is a wonderful wing exercise necessary for the young birds' (boys') development, important that the wings (ears) can be situated without striking a wing (ear) against anything. Two bronze hummingbirds (boys) growing up beneath a banana leaf, listening with all ears...Tommy and Gene...

Love,
Sage
