Grandpa Pops His Buttons

She’ll be 12 in June, and
already a New York All-Star Pitcher
on an otherwise boy’s
baseball team:

My granddaughter Eliza,
who throws right, bats right, lives right,
and some day (after we change
a few sexist rules) may well be wearing
New York Yankee pinstripes
and entertaining the crowd between innings
with her saxophone,

while her equally gifted twin sister,
my granddaughter Kara,
a fleet-footed long-distance runner
ranked 4th in the City in the 800-meters,
emerges as the nation’s first woman track star
to break the 4-minute mile
while pausing along the way to perform
a brief piano concert

Modesty keeps me from
saying more,
except to say that academically
they’re at the top of their class in everything.

Oh, why not say it? They’re perfect.

bravo! -- it isn't natural or healthy for grand pops to hold back when the subject is their grandchildren -- proud enough to have your buttons pop, and rightly so Gene -- cherish them my friend -- they are the spice that seasons the food of we aging folk -- peace and love my friend -- Jon Michael

Gene,
And a great popping of buttons it is, I had to duck 10,000 miles away.
I'm glad you didn't take the coy road, the hints-only route in case someone might accuse you of boasting, you said it straight and rightly so, and said it very well.

What a wonderful gift you have given Eliza and Kara - a treasure that will fill each of them with love and pride that their adored grandfather would take the time to write a poem just for them. I have no doubt this heirloom will travel down many generations.

not unlike their tubby old Grandpa, then!! :)) It's been said before many times, but the Genes just can't help it... The boyfriends are gonna have their work cut out for them, matchin up to Gramps' expectations... But just goes to show you can't have too/two much of a good thing! I'm getting your ruby tan from way over here, so take pity on the ozone, oh glowing one... xxx

At that age they are almost all perfect. The best years are between the terrible twos and adolescence. Wait a year or two. You may need to hang around to protect them from their parents. Then again, they may stay perfect. It's possible. [:o)

You play an important role in your granddaughter's lives, Gene. This gives me a taste of what it would have been like to have a grandpa. One died before I was born and the other when I was just a toddler and I don't remember him. But they say I was his favorite. But I have a B&W photo of Frank in suspenders, a "stogie" in the corner of his mouth and looking proud. How wonderful it must be to be nurtured by such unconditional love and pride, lucky girls! Wonderful write and what a gift they'll treasure...

Hi Gene, And you should say it! I like the ryhthm in this write, which keeps you reading to a perfect end! Good on you, my friend... isn't it great being a grandparent? Sometimes wish we could have been that first before being a parent, but I think grandparenting is the reward... thank you for sharing, this...
