When the Boy Becomes a Man

How a tall man emerged from a small boy to live happily ever after, he thought. Resurrected from the year 2001.

He plays with the silky hair
on his head
runs a finger the length
of his lovable nose
down through the tiny cleft
in his chin
follows the outline of two perfect ears
traces the sexy lopsided smile
closes the lids of his sleepy hazel eyes
grabs himself by his blue canvas belt
and swings himself into orbit

around his childhood
where he studies the rangy
underfed boy
with vacant eyes
brooding lips
a bow in his legs
and holes in his knickers
and wonders how
that sad funny looking kid
grew up
to be so damn handsome

...and so old

Hi Gene,I read episodiically and just finished total absorbtion in several of your recent poems. It seems to me your writing has grown stronger, especially in finding the right words for inviting a reader into that illusive space where feeelings meet senses. This particular poem is, for me, one of your best.

Oh, but look how beautiful he is inside!!

Not that he's not handsome now. Me, I like a man looks like
a man. Smile wrinkles are turn-ons!!

Kids don't know how to slow-dance.

As for writing a poem as good as this, they w i s h.

It is w o n d e r f u l. So are y o u.

So there!!

Ha! The other pome wot i just rote is about a window-cleaner and his hair... that'll keep you in suspenders until I post it! Is it only girls that relate to the old Danny Kate Ugly Duckling song?! Noooooo... Handsome Christian Anderson knew a thing or two about this, too. Think you last word is missing an initial "b" or a "g"... A fine Portrait of the Artist in his perennial prime. xx

A charming and wise self portrait Gene, it is funny how time and that pesky mirror puts thoughts like this in your head...I should cover mine!

Autobiographical and rich with the mantra of a man with a proper perspective of life and living it to the fullest. I love the light egotistical flavor of this work because ego, in the proper doses is vital as an elixir for joy. I bid you love and peace my dear friend. Jon Michael

This is the work of a mature man and poet
who has seen through the silliness of ego,
has found himself in the truest sense
and has the ability and grace to poke fun at himself-
one of my measures of greatness.
You tease with disarming charm, Gene,
in this delight of a poem...
for me as much philosophy as biography,
but then they are the same here.
